Come a Little Closer Lyrics

Time shakes, found you at the water
At first you were my father, now I love you like a brother
Earthquakes shake the dust behind you
This world at times will blind you
Still I know I'll see you there

Come a little closer, then you'll see
Come on, come on, come on
Things aren't always what they seem to be
Come on, come on, come on
Do you understand the things you been seein'
Come on, come on, come on
Do you understand the things that you've been dreaming
Come a little closer, then you'll see

Heartbreaks, the heavy world's upon your shoulders
Will we burn or we just smolder
Somehow I know I'll find you there
Ooh, I wanna see if you can change it, change it
Still I know I'll see you

Come a little closer, then you'll see
Come on, come on, come on
Things aren't always what they seem to be
Do you understand the things you been seein'
Come on, come on, come on
Do you understand the things that you've been dreaming
Come a little closer, then you'll see
Come a little closer, then you'll see

Ten thousand people stand alone now
And in the evening the sun sets
Tomorrow it will rise
Time flies by, they all sang along
Time flies by, they all sang along
Time flies by, they all sang along
Time flies, bye, bye

Come a little closer, then you'll see
Come on, come on, come on
Come a little closer, then you'll see
Come a little closer, then you'll see
Come a little closer, then you'll see

I think this song is about how people do not want to aknowledge how the world is and are always only trying to find happiness and not wanting to actualy change the world.

"Time shakes, found you at the water At first you were my father, now I love you like a brother Earthquakes shake the dust behind you This world at times will blind you Still I know I'll see you there"

He is hoping to make the other person understand how important it is to see the world how it trully is. First he had respect for how that someone used to live (father) but then he saw in that someone the possibility for them to acctually become something more.

"Come a little closer, then you'll see Come on, come on, come on Things aren't always what they seem to be Come on, come on, come on Do you understand the things you been seein' Come on, come on, come on Do you understand the things that you've been dreaming Come a little closer, then you'll see"

Pretty much self explanatory, but he hopes to make a point about how the other person understands the things he's been seeing and dreaming (dreaming in this case that reality is something it's not).

"Heartbreaks, the heavy world's upon your shoulders Will we burn or we just smolder Somehow I know I'll find you there Oooh, I wanna see if you can change it, change it Still I know I'll see you there"

About how difficult trying to change the world really is but he hopes to see them "there" (trying to change the world with him).

"Ten thousand people stand alone now And in the evening the sun sets Tomorrow it will rise Time flies by, they all sang along"

How about most of the world is "standing alone", thinking only about themselves. And then he talks about how the sun sets and rises, relating it to how things stay the same because nobody does anything to really change our status quo. And then "Time flies by, they all sang along", meaning they all (people of the world) only think about thenselves and sing along to those that make the world how it is today.

TL;DR: the song is about we need more political and engaged people trying to change the world and finding a greater good for mankind and less YOLO.

this song is about the world...and our blind eye to all catastrophes and lack of help as members of the human race...and the future state of any given situation even when we do aid in someway...we can't even beat the monsters among us on this planet >> this song has nothing to do with mushroom drugs >> and all the "praying" or "singing" that the victims do isn't going to remedy the situation ~~ COME A LITTLE CLOSER THEN YOU'LL SEE

I feel as if the first verse is about how a person was in trouble then they found someone pure and inspiring who later on became more of an equal because of things they have done 'DUST BEHIND YOU' could be a metaphor bad decisions.'this world at times will blind you' probably means that you know its not your fault you got caught up in that mess everybody makes mistakes "still i know ill see you there' probably means that the friend is strong the 2nd verse prob means something similar. How the friend and you go are at a breaking point and your at a crossroads are u guna lay down and let it defeat you or are u guna fight.(with the final verse i cant quite figure it out yet) and then the chorus my FAV PART is about how EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING has more meaning to it,more depth, more value then what is on the surface. And i also think that it is kind of a way to challenge the listener to really look at themselves and figure out why they are the way they are,why do you feel?

My Interpretation

@booboobooboo I don't entirely agree with you, but I liked how you mentioned the line "Earthquakes shake the dust behind you." I feel like this could symbolize how our bad decisions leave a trail of dust, or in this case, consequences for you and those behind you.

I think this song is about his relationship with God. The first verse talks about "found you at the water" which could signify a baptism. "At first you were my father/ but now I love you like a brother" could mean that he acknowledged the existence of God, but then something happened that truly brought him close to God. The choruses could be God talking to him, telling him to look more closely at the beauty of life and the world, and that even if things look bad there can still be good within them.

My Interpretation

This is what I got out of it also. :)

@darianb1031 yes I totally agree w u.i came all the way here to see if anyone else thought the same

This song sings to my soul. A favorite. I believe this song means that we may think the world or a person or a thing or a relationship is one way, but often if we just stopped and focused and zeroed in and thought about it, examined it a little closer, too the time, we would see the truth. "Come a little closer and you'll see. Things aren't always what they seem to be."

"Time flys by, they all sang along" meaning life moves very fast and we usually only have a chance to look at things at face value, and base our decisions and life on that short glance or assumption or stereotype. They all sang along means everyone is doing this, over and over again.

I think that the song is talking about waking up to what’s really going on in the world both physically and spiritually.

“Time shakes, found you at the water At first you were my father, now I love you like a brother”

I think right here he could be talking about the way he feels about God or Christ. Of course we should all see God as her father, but he still could have seen God in that way.

“Earthquakes shake the dust behind you This world at times will blind you Still I know I'll see you there”

Earthquakes could have something to do with things that shake your soul and make you realize that there is something beyond this world that you are haven’t recognized. After all, this world, at times, can blind you. When he says still I know I’ll see you there, he is either talking about heaven or hell. I believe he is talking about hell (as most celebrities sell their souls to get their dreams and their ways, yet they know what they are doing is leading them to hell, along with their followers.) It’s possible that he sees his fans as a bunch of sinners as most people nowadays don’t open their eyes and choose to not accept Christ (I could be wrong about this sentence).

Come a little closer, then you'll see Come on, come on, come on Things aren't always what they seem to be Come on, come on, come on Do you understand the things you been seein' Come on, come on, come on

If you come a little closer you will see the truth. We all have the option to open our eyes. He is asking if you really understand the things that you are seeing, or are you just living simple minded. One thing I got from this myself is that most people don’t understand that there is spiritual warfare going on in the world that causes, hate, anger, division, lust, and fear, etc.

“Do you understand the things that you've been dreaming Come a little closer, then you'll see”

Dreams usually have a meaning to our waking lives and most people don’t care to find out what they are about and what they mean.

“Heartbreaks, the heavy world's upon your shoulders”

People who are blind and do not understand what is going on in the world are usually just heartbroken and feel like the world is on there shoulders, and over all, just overwhelmed. [If they would just open their eyes they wouldn’t be afraid because they would know what is going on, and most importantly, that God will take care of them.]

“Will we burn or we just smolder”

Matt Schultz grew up in a Christian family. In Christian belief, burning often represents the refiners fire which is where God molds us to be a beautiful being, and burns away our imperfections and sins into nothing. If you don’t burn in the refiners fire you will smolder into nothing.

“Somehow I know I'll find you there”

Again he is either talking about heaven or hell. I believe he is talking about hell depending if he has a pessimist mindset. But also he could be recognizing that most people will not open their eyes to Christ so maybe he’ll see them in hell.

“Ooh, I wanna see if you can change it, change it Still I know I'll see you“

He wants to see if you can change it; if you can open your eyes an and be saved. Still he doesn’t think that it is likely.

“Ten thousand people stand alone now And in the evening the sun sets Tomorrow it will rise Time flies by, they all sang along”

He’s talking about how so many people are alone and divided nowadays, and the same thing happens every day over and over again; so many people living a lonely life with their eyes blinded by the world.

CONCLUSION: I believe that the song has to do with Matt’s view of the world and how blind people are. Sadly a lot of people choose to ignore Christ therefore bringing their spiritual doom and bringing a life of blindness. What I think is sad, is that Matt is choosing to do the same although he knows what is right and wrong. He has seen the world and believes that there is no salvation for himself. Then again this is just my interpretation but I do believe this is what the song is about. Remember that Jesus loves us. We are all imperfect and that is why Christ died on the cross so that we can be saved from the penalties of our sins if we accept him. God bless you all and may you come a little closer and see.

My Interpretation

@multihenya I also believe that when he says still I know I’ll see you there, he could be talking about Christ the whole time. This could be a song him talking to Christ and the chorus being Christ, as Christ is a brother to us and God is our father.

@multihenya Thank you so much for posting this. I just listened to the song for probably the twenty-thousandth time within a couple years and finally delved deep into the lyrics and came up with the entirely same interpretation as you! I felt like maybe I was reaching a bit since bands that categorize as more secular don't usually make songs about religion, but I was so stoked to see that I'm not the only one who thinks this.

This song gives me heavy Christian undertones about salvation. With the state of the world now, I've been very concerned with the...

The first time I heard this song on the radio, I swear I had heard it before, but with a much strong/impactful chorus.... anyone know what song I may have been remembering?

Was it Love Song by The Cure?

Here's a little mashup I did, which highlights how well they fit together: http://www.singsnap.com/karaoke/r/b2998e45a

I am wondering if it wasn't a live appearance on Letterman or some other show...maybe even the leaked studio excerpt. I STRONGLY (not a strong enough word for it) dislike country, so I don't think it would have been the original or any covers that didn't stray from the original's genre. Not the Cure- but thanks for looking into it. I think it has to be a versioning issue..... differences in "strongness" normally come from mixing or acoustics (live/studio).

I first thought this song had some similarities to Coldplay's "Talk." Perhaps, that is the song you are thinking of.

What I think from watching the video many times is that the message in the song is that in the end mostly everyone will reunite in hell or other evil weird looking world. In the video, in the beginning he starts running away from a death reaper looking creature after the phase of being born and after that, he fights for his life against evil looking creatures. Hes representing himself as a warrior in the video and is always stating to his challengers "come a little closer than you'll see, come come come come" and is always slaying his attackers. Towards the end of the video hes riding into a hell like planet in a demon like creature as he states "time flies time flies they all say hello" and by that i think hes saying that everyone has an end and will reunite in hell. But like I said, in the end of each obstacle he states " Still i know ill see you there" because no one is invincible and will eventually fall. This is just what I think and it may kinda sound stupid but its just an unnecessary dumb thought that I had to type only because its challenging but from a pretty cool song with a weird video.

My Interpretation

never mind, this is a stupid interpretation. Gibling's interpretation is more reasonable.

I love this song.

I once made an interpretation on here. And I want to clarify that I believe this song is about his view on the current population’s blindness. I think it hugely has to do with coming closer to Christ so that you can see the world for what it truly is.

My Interpretation

@multihenya What do you see as the way the world truly is?

@multihenya I guess that’s a long conversation. And I can read your previous comment. :)
