First Time Caller Lyrics
Darling, we're starting, she said
We go alive in a heartbeat
Waiting for something in my car
A little hope out of nothing
And through the hum on the line
She said I was a first time caller
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
Falling like trash from the sky
I hit a patchwork of loneliness, crooked and wild
Hung from the stars and dropped through the night
To a heatwave in hard placelessness, neon tiles
And I got nothing but time
She said I was a first time caller
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
I want you to love me
More than I love you
Tell me if that's something you can do
I want you to love me
More than I love you
Tell me if that's something you can do
First time caller, long time listener
First time caller, long time listener
First time caller, long time listener
First time caller, long time listener
We go alive in a heartbeat
Waiting for something in my car
A little hope out of nothing
And through the hum on the line
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
I hit a patchwork of loneliness, crooked and wild
Hung from the stars and dropped through the night
To a heatwave in hard placelessness, neon tiles
And I got nothing but time
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
More than I love you
Tell me if that's something you can do
I want you to love me
More than I love you
Tell me if that's something you can do
First time caller, long time listener
First time caller, long time listener
First time caller, long time listener

This song is about making it out of the friendzone. Yes, it is possible to make it out of the friendzone.
"Darling, we're starting, she said We go alive in a heartbeat Waiting for something in my car A little hope out of nothing And through the hum on the line"
Darling we're starting, I think this is when she finally starts liking him, she finally realizes he's not just a nice guy, but THE nice guy. He's in his car, talking on the phone with her, and then one of them finally lets the cat out of the bag. A little hope out of nothing, makes me think he was the one that told her, because he took the chance, knowing that would half near end the friendship.
"She said I was a first time caller, but a long time listener,"
This part here is gold. This was the first time she's ever felt something for him, the first time call. He had always been there for her, through relationships and crap, he was the long time listener.
"Falling like trash from the sky I hit a patchwork of loneliness, crooked and wild Hung from the stars and dropped through the night To a heatwave in hard placelessness, neon tiles And I got nothing but time"
This part clearly explains what it's like to be stuck in the friendzone. Falling like trash from the sky, every time you're with the person you completely adore, you feel as if you're flying, ecstatic, but when they leave you for another, it's like falling from a thousand feet and going through hell because they're with someone else. And I got nothing but time, that's all he is, if not her, he has time, all of it, he really loves her.
"I want you to love me More than I love you Tell me if that's something you can do"
This is him, asking her if she'll put in as much effort as he will into the relationship, he's pretty much asking her to take him serious.
