Calling Cards Lyrics
Used a calling card at the pay phone from the other coast
Just to tell you how good it was to hear you in those songs you wrote
Made me think there was something coming
Really something worth waiting for
"Blah blah blah blah blah blah"
They talk about, oh
Every dial tone, every truck stop, every heartbreak
I love you more
Looking like you just woke up from making songs
Shooting satellites that blew up the pay phones
Singing we'll all be together
Even when we're not together
With our arms around each other
With our faith still in each other
I've got calling cards from twenty years ago
Just to tell you how good it was to hear you in those songs you wrote
Made me think there was something coming
Really something worth waiting for
"Blah blah blah blah blah blah"
They talk about, oh
I love you more
Looking like you just woke up from making songs
Shooting satellites that blew up the pay phones
Singing we'll all be together
Even when we're not together
With our arms around each other
With our faith still in each other
I've got calling cards from twenty years ago

This is one of my favorite songs from the new album. It seems to be about a past long-distance relationship. The calling cards may be literal, but also a metaphor for the emotional connection with the person, of which she has never quite let go.
She's just a few years older than me and I still have some of my old calling cards, too, inexplicably. Funny how something that was so valuable 20 years ago is now totally obsolete.
When I saw Neko Case on tour she introduced this song by saying it was about using calling cards to stay in touch with people, especially musician friends, while she was on the road. She dedicated the song to all of her past and present bandmates.
