Scotty Lyrics

Now you move so smooth
It's all new inside you.
Spins that rhythm
You let push through.

Rows to rows, mile to mile
Gaze is fixed, eyes on fire.
Something secret sleeps deep
Inside.

It's your natural place
You stay
Scotty's got his way, yeah.
And you laugh in their faces
You say, "Scotty's got to stay," yeah.

They blink once, they blink twice
Seen it all, hearts like ice.
Something secret sleeps deep
Within you.

It's your natural place
You stay
Scotty's got his way, yeah.
And you laugh in their faces
You say, "Scotty's got to stay," yeah.

It's your natural place
And you laugh in their faces.

It's your natural place
You stay
Scotty's got his way, yeah.
You laugh in their faces
You say...

If I could fly, I'd pick you up
[It's your natural place]
I'd take you into the night
[You stay]
And show you love
[Scotty's got his way, yeah]

If I could fly, I'd pick you up
[You laugh in their faces]
I'd take you into the night
[You say...]
And show you love
[Scotty's got to stay, yeah]

i will always wonder what it's about. the question I ask myself most is, "Is Scotty a good guy?" It almost sounds like she's in an abusive relationship, and Scotty lives with her and it's all the people telling her that he's a deadbeat and that she'll be happier without him, but she justifies it somehow nonetheless. "Scotty's got to stay / Scotty's got his way."

@Aniland I agree with this! That's pretty much what I thought about when first hearing/reading the lyrics. "It's your natural place, you stay" kind of reminds me of someone justifying their own abuse. As if maybe they believe being submissive or abused is their natural place in the relationship. So they stay in it. And therefore the abuser, Scotty, gets his way. And then "You laugh in their face as you say Scotty's got to say" kind of reminds me of someone scoffing and dismissing others' concerns. Like you said, maybe her friends tell her he's no good but she...

In my opinion I think it is a song about a lonely person maybe (Anti social, introvert) who prefers the unknown of his mind.

The person names the ego in his psyche "Scotty." Scotty is the only friend he has in his solemnity.

"Now you move so smooth It's all new inside you. Spins that rhythm You let push through"

This person finds comfort in his new discovery, a new personality- new friend.

"Rows to rows, mile to mile Gaze is fixed, eyes on fire."

millions of people are watching and judging.

"Something secret sleeps deep Within you."

The power of his mind- the alter ego, Scotty.

"They blink once, they blink twice Seen it all, hearts like ice."

The judging on lookers don't understand the persons reason for accepting his new beliefs and possibly judging him as a "schitzo" since he refers to Scotty in second person. They are cold because they judge him as crazy.

"It's your natural place You stay Scotty's got his way, yeah. And you laugh in their faces You say, "Scotty's got to stay,"

The person finds comfort in the solemnity of his mind and prefers Scotty than reality. Scotty is the personality that his mind has created. He prefers Scotty over his own and everyone else and finds his true happiness with Scotty. He asserts the presence of Scotty.

In the end the chorus of Benny Mardones's song "Into the Night" is used in a conversation between Scotty and person.

Scotty is singing the Chorus and the chorus of this song responds by confirming Scotty.

My Interpretation

The realization hit me earlier this evening that the main character of this song could actually be a boy.

This boy is in the process of growing into himself, and he's starting to realize he's different. He meets another guy named Scotty who causes something amazing to awaken inside of him. Being with Scotty is the first time he's felt at home and at peace. All of his prior romances (all of whom have been with women) have felt wrong and in-genuine somehow, and have failed to open up his heart, and he is realizing that Scotty is the person who is finally making him feel the feeling he has been dreaming about. He didn't see it coming, but being with Scotty is the most beautiful surprise he could have possibly discovered. His friends and family judge him and don't understand, but the force of their criticisms pales in comparison to the euphoric strength and sense of well-being he gets from being in his first ever healthy relationship, with Scotty. He has realized he is gay and this realization has suddenly caused his world to make sense and unfold in a wonderful new way.

This theory fits so beautifully, I don't think I'll ever be able to think of the song differently.

These are NOT the lyrics to "Scotty" by Pure Bathing Culture; they're the lyrics to "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones. The confusion is understandable -- Pure Bathing Culture uses some of the lyrics from "Into the Night" at the end of "Scotty." But the lyrics of "Scotty" are completely different from what's posted here.
