Automation Baby Lyrics
You can be whatever you want to
You can say what you need to say
You don’t care if the party’s over
There’s always somewhere new to play
And you don’t see the fascination
Of anything around you
It’s just a world tied up with wire
And you don’t need to know
It’s automation baby
There’s always somewhere else to go
That’s automation baby
Just automation baby
You don’t need to be protected
Because nothing shocks you any more
And you don’t care if you’re rejected
You drag and drop them when you’re bored
And you don’t see the fascination
Of anything around you
It’s just a world tied up with wire
And you don’t need to know
It’s automation baby
There’s always somewhere else to go
And you don’t feel the power of nations
It’s just a world lit from behind
And you don’t need to grow
That’s evolution baby
There’s always someone else to know
And you don’t see the fascination
Of anything around you
It’s just a world tied up with wire
And you don’t need to know
It’s automation baby
There’s always somewhere else to go
That’s automation baby
Just automation baby
You can say what you need to say
You don’t care if the party’s over
There’s always somewhere new to play
Of anything around you
It’s just a world tied up with wire
And you don’t need to know
It’s automation baby
There’s always somewhere else to go
Just automation baby
Because nothing shocks you any more
And you don’t care if you’re rejected
You drag and drop them when you’re bored
Of anything around you
It’s just a world tied up with wire
And you don’t need to know
It’s automation baby
There’s always somewhere else to go
It’s just a world lit from behind
And you don’t need to grow
That’s evolution baby
There’s always someone else to know
Of anything around you
It’s just a world tied up with wire
And you don’t need to know
It’s automation baby
There’s always somewhere else to go
Just automation baby

Listened to this while reading "Accelerando" by Charles Stross, and it was really appropriate in retrospect.
This song reminds me a lot of my days in AOL chat rooms in the mid-90s. I'd hang with one crew, then drop by another room when the chatter dried up there. Always somewhere to hang out.
You didn't have to be yourself, you could be anyone. Paint up a persona according to how you felt that day.
Through these interactions you'd be exposed to just about everything. Love, hate, suicide, loss, elation - it would tend to lose its meaning after a while. Just another expression of people behind digital masks, none of whom you would ever get to know in person.
