August Clown Lyrics

August clowns are sad,
And I just figured out why:
I've been walkin' through the sand
With just you on my mind,
And all that's left of the summer sky
Is the moment you're flyin' by.
There's things a boy can never tell.
Know you by your hands too well.
Know you by your hands too well.

Damn you from this wretched boy.
You've stolen more than sleep and joy.
An' I'm goin' back where I belong
Where the time is right an' straight an' slow.
Goin' back where I belong
Just to watch them thistles grow.

August skin's left golden brown,
And I've seen too much of this lonely town.
Too much thinkin', walkin' 'round;
Too much talkin' August clown.
Too much talkin' August clown.

Damn you from this wretched boy.
You've stolen more than sleep and joy.
I'm going back where I belong
Where the time is straight an' right an' slow.
Goin' back where I belong
Just to watch them thistles grow.
Just to watch them thistles grow.

Cover art for August Clown lyrics by Gregory Alan Isakov

Well to me this is a song about a guy from a small town from the inner country (maybe from a desert area - ie. "sand" and "thistles") that fell in love with a girl that only spend some time in the town and then left. Now the guy is completely miserable and he has too much time to think about her. I imagine him as a teenager that doesn't have too much to do but think about her. I am not sure what the first part means "August clown's a Saint"...Looked over the internet and found out August clown is a kind of clown, but not sure about the meaning in this song. I am from a big city and imagine those towns as places were everything gets old and rusty (kind of the Radiator Springs town from the animated movie "Cars" - sorry got kids). But I also find those place beautiful, where the time goes "right, straight, and slow" and where you can get in touch with your inner self (maybe too much). Anyway, beautiful song, about a brokenhearted boy.

My Interpretation

@sudaka August clowns are sad.
