So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Call me and tell me you care,
There's a country to flatten over there.
Don't bore me with the truth,
I live alone, don't you?
Write down the things I should say,
There ain't enough hours in the day,
Perfect my cold stare,
Tell your friends I did a dare.
But don't you understand?
The hunger makes the man.
With all that lies in front of us,
The world looks so ridiculous to me.
Laugh with me hyena.
Laugh with me hyena.
Laugh with me hyena.
Laugh with me now.
I love you, I love my black eye.
These knots I'll never untie.
They'll believe us in who we are,
There's history in a scar.
But don't you understand?
The hunger makes the man.
With all that lies in front of us,
The world looks so ridiculous to me.
Laugh with me hyena.
Laugh with me hyena.
Laugh with me hyena.
So laugh with me now.
Laugh with me now,
Laugh with me now,
Laugh with me now.
Laugh with me hyena.
Laugh with me hyena.
Laugh with me hyena.
So laugh with me now,
Laugh with me some then.

WHAT a tune.
With all that lies in front of us, the world looks so ridiculous to me!
Hunger makes the man, aren't enough hours in the day. These are the things I think about. It's such a thought provoking tune, and a tune at that. I love the Hyena thing, I am reminded of The Lion King, I think a lot of people enjoy their LULZ on the interweb and thats where the Hyena thing comes from I reckon.
Here in Western society so much lies in front of us, hunger makes the man, do a dare. We are truly domesticated, we never really earn our food and material posessions. So have a good LOL at it all, the way we live, all in the name of being civilised people. It's BORING. Not enough hours because people just wanna party, and thats our way of saying that the day has no adventure.
Yeah, laugh at it all, best song I've seen in a while it really SAYS stuff, like...
Glad I bought this album.
