Q&A
Late July Lyrics
Gold digger took my money,
Dipped my heart and hands in honey.
Oh, snake lady stole my savings,
Told gold digger she was having my babies.
Well, gold digger swore,
Snake lady fell.
Yeah, took gold digger up to Chapel Hill.
I married her fast;
Murdered her young.
Took my money back and made my run.
Bus driver,
All in red,
Go pull this bus over and end up dead.
Go drive this bus down to Mexico,
Park it on the cliff where that good grass grows
Until a chopper came along
One sunny day,
To burn my crops,
Lock me away.
Girl, I'm eager,
Young,
And qualified.
Got a date with that chair, oh,
In late July.
My momma,
Old and grey,
Sittin' at her home,
Just a-weepin' away.
Her only boy,
Washed down the drain.
Gonna take her son and lock him away.
Well, momma should be
Proud of me.
I lived like a man,
Oh, I'll die like a king.
My pap
Be old and fat,
Chewin' his cigars with his hair slicked back.
Roll him over,
Beat him black,
Say it's from that boy he never had.
Well, Papa should be in my place
To fry like bacon,
Hang like lace.
Big Betty,
Oh, my old squeeze.
Kissed you so good you go weak in the knees.
Come to see your old man, Pop,
I wanna have you there when my big heart stops.
Don't you worry,
Don't you fret.
I won't die with no regrets.
Because I'm eager,
Young,
And qualified.
Yeah, I'm eager,
Young,
And starry-eyed.
Oh, the big leagues call
And I reply,
"I got a date with that chair, oh,
In late July."
Dipped my heart and hands in honey.
Oh, snake lady stole my savings,
Told gold digger she was having my babies.

Lyrics changed to fit timeline...
Dipped my heart and hands in honey. (seduced him; mesmerized him) Well, gold digger swore, (trust me) Told gold digger she was having my babies. (fell for it) Yeah, took gold digger up to Chapel Hill. (hook, line, and sinker) Married her fast (they hitched)
Old digger took my money, (~$2,500) Oh, snake lady stole my savings (got 'em + 401k.)
Murdered her young. Snake lady fell. Took my money back and made my run. (at this point, she dead, his ~2,500 dollars are recouped minus McDonald's and other expenses she's had in the meantime. Unsure of 401k standings, but those things take time, so he probably didn't get that back considering what happens next.)
The rest leads to his demise. Got busted. Chair = el3ctriC chair. He dead.
Interesting way of mixing up lines in the verses until he made his run out of town. I wonder if that was just due to helping the flow of the lyrics (rhyming) or if that was an idea he wanted to go with initially.
Bus driver, all in red - what's the meaning there? park it on the cliff where that green grass grows - meaning there?
@thuhreb bus driver all in red might refer to holding up the bus driver with a gun and teling him to keep driving to mexico. the bus driver might be a little red in the face during that time. could mean something else, but that's my take.

park it on a cliff where that good grass grows might be referring to marijuana, that good grass. he then talks about the chopper coming along one sunny day to burn his crops and lock him away. he was growing marijuana, maybe an opiate or something, and now the feds here to take...

it's a very fatalistic song, everything seems to be going wrong for him and he feels for his mother but wishes his, likely drunk and abusive, father would take his place in the chair -- blaming his father for his upbringing and consequent path of choices.
i'm kind of surprised there isn't more comments here, especially this many years later, but ey.
