Yvette Lyrics
I can barely make out a little light from the house on the cul-de-sac
bedroom upstairs, it's a family affair.
I've watched you in class, your eyes are cut glass and you stay covered up,
head to your toe, so nobody will notice you
I might not be a man yet,
but that bastard will never be,
so I'm cleaning my Weatherby
I sight in my scope
and I hope against hope.
I hope against hope.
Your mother seems nice, I don't understand why she won't say anything.
As if she can't see who he turned out to be.
I might not be a man yet,
but your father will never be.
so I load up my Weatherby,
and I let out my breath,
and I couple with death.
I couple with death.
Saw your father last night, and in the window the light made a silhouette.
Saw him hold you that way, he won't hold you that way anymore, Yvette.

A young kid notices a female classmate has a domestic problem, and he decides it's up to him to take care of it for her. Yvette's father has taken to a sexual relationship with her. Her mother won't do anything about it, so the boy decides he will. Cleans up his rifle and snipes him through the window.
I'd agree, except that it seems to me to be mostly the kid planning this shooting and stops short of him actually going through with it. It reminds me a lot of "Sink Hole" by Patterson Hood, although in that song it feels more like just fantasizing about killing the banker and in "Yvette" it seems more like the kid's actually planning to do it. But I like the fact that it stops short of the killing, because the uncertainty about whether he will actually do it or not keeps a lot of tension in it. And...

And that unresolved tension is what makes the Southern Gothic genre so great, isn't it?
Got it.
Got it.
No, I think he actually goes through with it. That's why he can say with confidence. "Saw him hold you that way, he won't hold you that way anymore, Yvette."

@jestering No, jfoxx is right, he definitely took the shot, hence the lines:

"I let out my breath" - a common practice immediately before pulling the trigger, aids in accuracy "I couple with death" - he embraced the act of killing

And yea there might be some similarities between this and the Avett Brother's hit song.
When they play it live I want to use the N word. No! Do not strum like that Avett's!
Someone needs to get them a stick of beemans or something...

Yea I've got to reply to myself again. It's not a modulating chord it's the way it goes back to the i chord (c# minor). It's similar to their one song or whatever. He doesn't do it every verse. I think the first time he does is the second verse. Well I was hungover and usually have a pretty good ear. Had to pick up a guitar this time.
