I feel like this song is about feeling comfort in another person. Loving someone so much that you are bettered by them. "I would sleep better on your floor than I wold ever in my bed".
But that person may not in turn feel the same way as illustrates by the lyrics "sometimes things jus don't work out the way you want them to".
They want to care for their love like an injured animal, "break your neck and I will love you like a bird that cannot fly".
Loving someone more than they love you. Teenage love.
I interpret it as a song about a friend he has always loved but never fully gone for. He's stuck in his want for her.
The line about "And she said, "Break your neck, and I will love you every night. You will be mine" makes me think about unhealthy love. Like she will love him only as a victim, someone that is wounded and she has to safe or help.
