Brave Lyrics

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody's lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle 'neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody's been there, everybody's been stared down
By the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
But don't run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

Innocence, your history of silence
Won't do you any good
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don't you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
See you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you

Brave is a song about speaking your mind. Too often we hold things in that the world would appreciate because we are self conscious or afraid of what people will think. This is an anthem for all generations of people because at one time or another in our lives, everyone has been there. Being able to feel comfortable saying what you want to say is also something that unfortunately most people will never experience. The song was inspired inspired by Sara's close friend who struggled with coming out with being gay. The song also lends meaning to just about anything else someone could be afraid to tell another person or the world. The upbeat tempo and inspiring lyrics command us all to aspire to be heard. Everyone is unique and has something to lend to others, it does take bravery to "let the words fall out" but when we do, only then are we truly free. This song is THE anthem for living free in mind, body & spirit.

Song Meaning

I love this song. Too often, I feel trapped with no way out. I love the lines "Innocence, your history of silence Wont do you any good Did you think it would" and also "Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live Maybe one of these days you can let the light in"

I have this…friend. She's really clingy and she won't let me do ANYTHING. But I'm almost her only friend, and she has bipolar depression, and asperger's syndrome. I really don't know how to say what I want to say. I jaunt want to get OUT of here! I want to get out of this cage, there's really no other way to explain it.

I love this song because it gives me hope.

BRAVE is just the song that brings me back to the old times specially recently I got my heart broken by the person who made me feel so important so happy for the first time. Brave is the song that tells my heart to be confident and to speak up I got bullied since grade 2 It was just horrible I left the school recently and entered my new school as a new girl and before I was just shy and when I entered my new school as the bad ass girl but seriously im not what they think I am. When I cried infront of all my friends they were shocked thinking that im just the little miss perfect I acted like everthing was alright I acted that nothing is wrong with me I hid all my pain behind my smile and laugh for they do not know that it was just fake I felt lost in my own mind I couldn't eat anything I was just that depressed everyone cared even the guys in my class they were crying but then this guy who said all those I care for you I love you words he really didn't mean it he told me what I wanted to hear not what he really thinks. but I still live the guy that broke me not once but many times.

Memory

Words are powerful and we can either be the friend or foe of someone else with them. We can use them to build someone up as well as ourselves or knock down the person and bring ourselves down in the process.

Brave is pretty much saying that we can use words for either or not use them at all and someone suffers in silence as the result. It has powerful effects no matter which angle you see it under and probably is a reference with bullying which is such a common problem today.

What lines struck the most with me was:

"Innocence, your history of silence Won’t do you any good Did you think it would?"

My personal input on that is the fact that I've been a victim and all I did was stay quiet, not even to reach out to anyone while it was happening and why I fell into a depression to begin with. Therefore, people just thought I was shy and innocent and in turn took a nice advantage for it to affect the way it did and hard to be taken seriously if I finally ever were to share anything. It's about reaching out and sharing your thoughts and it can possibly save many other people's lives as well as your own let alone the mental and emotional scars and pain one has to endure.

For those who are being bullied I just have to say this - there may be a nice amount of people who are inflicting their pain (which is why many bully in the first place - they are in pain themselves) and giving their hate onto you even if you didn't do anything, but especially now that we have the advantage with the Internet and whatnot, it's guaranteed that there's a whole lot more people out there who relate and want to know you based on your experience alone and even those who are not far from your reach in real life that love you more than you think. It can save your life. The world is a big place, you don't have to suffer alone. Say something. Be Brave.

My Opinion
Cover art for Brave lyrics by Sara Bareilles

With respect to The Blessed Unrest album this song opens for, the subject chosen (i.e. living courageously) applies as well to the artistic drive to create. Sara mentioned that the album's title was lifted from a quote by dancer/choreographer Martha Graham, who was describing that impulse, that "divine dissatisfaction," to find the will to execute one's plan. Sara is associating personal bravery in hostile situations with artistic indulgence in spite of unfamiliar territory. After all, both situations involve people finding the world unsatisfactory as he/she opts to change it.

"Brave" is how the Blessed Unrest will spring from silence and wrestle with injustice.

I watched the Official Music video, and this song is about bullying.

My favorite verses are:

"Innocence, your history of silence Won't do you any good Did you think it would? Let your words be anything but empty Why don't you tell them the truth?"

For me, this song tells me to speak up when injustice happens, to me or to other people.

But it means so much more to me.

"Say what you wanna say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave"

It reminded me, that there are things in my life that I have to tell, that I have to scream out into the world, because they belong to me, they describe who I am and those things are things that I shouldn't have to keep quiet about.

I have to be brave. I am allowed to cut my hair short, despite my grandma's opinion. I am allowed to be non-binary. I am allowed to be all these things that I want to be.

And I want to be brave and I want to be me.

Like it or not Sara Bareilles is a poet and her call to mobilize people to be 'Brave' in this song, is her opening the proverbial window to someones darkness and despair. Everyone has a story, something to say whatever your education or supposed lack therof. It may be sentimental or corny but, if you need to hear it-you are special you are loved, beautiful, a true treasure. "no matter what you've done or what's been done to you, these words about you-are true!". Lysa Terkeurst
