Death Valley Lyrics

I wanna see your animal side
Let it all out
I wanna see the dirt
Under your skin
I need your broken promises

I want the guts and glory, baby
This town is wasted and alone

But we are alive
Here in death valley
But don’t take love off the table yet
Cause tonight it’s just fire alarms and losing you
We love a lot
So we only lose a little
But we are alive

I wanna see your animal side
Let it all out
Oh there you go; undress to impress
You can wear the crown but you’re no princess

So put the “D” in dirt now baby
Let’s get you wasted and alone

Cause we are alive
Here in death valley
But don’t take love off the table yet
Cause tonight it’s just fire alarms and losing you
We love a lot
So we only lose a little
But we are alive

We’re gonna die
It’s just a matter of time
Hard times come
Good times go
I’m either gone in an instant
Or here till the bitter end
I never know
What I’ve got will make you feel more alive
I’ll be your favorite drug I will get you high
I will get you high

But we are alive
Here in death valley
But don’t take love off the table yet
Cause tonight it’s just fire alarms and losing you
We love a lot
So we only lose a little
But we are alive

I think this song is about a dysfunctional relationship.

"I wanna see your animal side Let it all out I wanna see the dirt Under your skin" The dirt under her skin is all the shit she has done, all the mistakes she's made, and her animal side is her wild albeit agressive side. I believe they both get in fights with each other often.

"I need your broken promises I want the guts and glory baby yeah, baby yeah" He knows she's no good for him, but he still wants it all, the bad and the good things.

"This town is wasted and alone But we are alive Here in death valley But don’t take love off the table yet" The town / Death Valley is a metaphor for the point of no return in their relationship. Still, they are 'alive', meaning that they know their relationship can't work out, but they are still trying.

"We love a lot So we only lose a little" They love a lot; but not each other, they sleep with other people, one betrays the other. But they can't really call the other out on that, because both are unfaithful.

"Oh there you go, undress to impress You can wear the crown but you’re no princess, yeah yeah yeah" She tries to make everything up to him by sleeping with him. I believe he is wealthy or something, a status symbol for her, thus she wears the crown by being his lover. But it's all fake, her feelings aren't real, not really ; she's no princess.

"We’re gonna die It’s just a matter of time Hard times come Good times go" Dying is a metaphor for breaking up -> their relationship will die one way or another. They have more hardships than good times, no nice moments can make up for the turmoil.

"I’m either gone in an instant Or here til the bitter end I never know" He can either choose to leave her, or try fixing their relationship and die trying. He isn't sure which way to go.

"What I’ve got will make you feel more alive I’ll be your favourite drug I will get you high" This refers to sleeping with each other again, they can't really have a healthy relationship per se, but maybe they can stay friends with benefits. They are each others 'favorite drug' after all, but drugs are also dangerous, deadly even.

That's what I've got^^ I love FOB, their lyrics are so complex and there are so many ways to interpret them! I hope my try to make sense of the lyrics was understandable; English is not my mother tongue, thus I was probably just ranting... <3

My Interpretation

Very good explanation. I think you really understood what they were trying to express in that piece of art and helped us to do it as well, THX #1 most played song in my iPod, just for the record lol

I love the sound of this song and honestly it would be my favorite ever, but it has been killing me since i heard it the lyric "Let’s get you wasted and alone". That is obviously an allusion to 'date rape' and its really gross for fall out boy. It does play off the lyric "this town is wasted and alone" but they could have just repeated the lyric instead of being rape-y in the first place.

@lesbifobfans I definitely see how you could get that interpretation of that line, but what it struck me as - especially given the context of the rest of the song - was a situation where they're flirting and drinking together and then they have drunk sex. Consider that that line follows just a few lines on from "Oh there you go, undress to impress", making it clear that she's actively trying to make this happen as well. There's nothing to suggest a lack of consent or any sort of drink-spiking, and the "undress to impress" line makes it seem fairly clear that...

I feel kinda like this song is somewhat about gambling, maybe even Vegas? I dont know. Can anyone interpret "So put the D in dirt" cuz that line... I can't...

I think some people misinterpret the line "let's get you wasted and alone". I think he's saying that it doesn't take much for her to cheat on him, just to be drunk and alone with someone, and I think that because of others' comments on how this girl has done and keeps doing all these things, and I also have personal experience with this kind thing, so it really hits hard.
