Comprehension

everything i have to say is open ended
far too much to fit into two minutes and thirty seconds
and we've been focusing our energy on absolute conformity
to principles that don't always make sense
like when your privilege is the only reason
that you can live how you say we all ought to
and all the slogans you shout fail to take into account
that catchy sentences could never make much sense
of all the problems that we've been yelling about
oh but i can't claim perfection
until i can claim comprehension
of the problems that are far too complex for me to fully understand
and we can't just react to disagreements with insults and attacks
on the members of our self-proclaimed so-called community
or how will we learn anything?
knowledge comes in the form of conversations
or by tuning in to your public radio station
and we can't just assume
that anyone who's not hip to the struggle
can't help us change the world
or maybe if we ever start a whole brand new one
how much can we really gain from self-righteous exclusion
of the ones on who we currently rely to stay alive
and whose needs get ignored most of the time
oh but i can't claim perfection
until i can claim comprehension
of the problems that are far too complex for me to fully understand
but i'll keep learning all i can and knowing that i can't
ever claim to be an authority on knowing anything
