Even When You Fall Lyrics
Ninth of December
Sky filled with blue
I don't remember
The last thing I said to you
But remember
I'll always love you
Every eighth of December
I think of you
Starting over
Just like you wanted to
Remember
I'll always dream with you
I've been standing here for hours by the door
I've been waiting
For you
To come back to me
Even when you fall
Fifth of December
Out of the blue
I can never
Return the life he took from you
But remember
I'll always stand for you
I've been standing here for weeks by the door
I've been waiting
For you
To come back to me once more
Even when you fall
(Ninth of December)
Even when you fall
(Sky filled with blue)
Even when you fall
(I don't remember)
Even when you fall
(The last thing I said to you)
Even when you fall
(But remember)
I'll always love you
I've been standing here for years by the door
I've been waiting
For you
To come back to me
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
I will still love you
Even when you fall
Sky filled with blue
I don't remember
The last thing I said to you
But remember
I'll always love you
I think of you
Starting over
Just like you wanted to
Remember
I'll always dream with you
I've been waiting
For you
To come back to me
Even when you fall
Out of the blue
I can never
Return the life he took from you
But remember
I'll always stand for you
I've been waiting
For you
To come back to me once more
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
(Sky filled with blue)
Even when you fall
(I don't remember)
Even when you fall
(The last thing I said to you)
Even when you fall
(But remember)
I'll always love you
I've been waiting
For you
To come back to me
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
Even when you fall
I will still love you

December 8, 1980 was the day John Lennon was murdered. The song seems to revolve around the loss the narrative voice feels revolving around that infamous day. There are other allusions to Lennon in the lines "starting over", 'I'll always dream with you" (Imagine) and "I'll always stand for you" (Lennon's cover of Stand by me). Whether the song is directed at Lennon's memory, or another person is ambiguous to me. He say's "the life he took from you", which would seem to be a direct reference to Lennon's murder; however, later in the song he says "the last words I said to you," which is a little less clear. Maybe the writer chose to tell this story from the perspective of someone close to Lennon--a friend or family member?
