great opening to a great album.
reminds me of that adage about gazing into an abyss, and it gazing back into you. life can be f***ing brutal sometimes, and i think this song alludes to those times when you willingly gaze into that abyss with a dark, morbid fascination. like precariously stepping onto the precipice of complete darkness...of mind and soul. the line about holding witness/passing out makes me think of losing yourself in that space (consciousness fading, darkness taking hold) and maybe never coming back. it's about dying, for sure...maybe literally or an allusion to death of ego or emotion.
and the old believer is also amazing. really deep, heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics mixed with a kind of doom/shoegaze vibe.
