Weight of Living, Pt. I

It's certainly referencing Samuel Coleridge's 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. In said poem, the Mariner becomes stranded at sea, surrounded by ice, until a lone albatross brings sun and wind, and his ship is free. The albatross remains with the ship, but the Mariner shoots it with his crossbow, worried that it's draining food supplies. The albatross, however, turns out to be a the bringer of the good weather, and in killing it, the Mariner dooms the entire ship. As punishment, he is forced to wear the albatross around his neck as a reminder of his evil deed. I think the song is referring to someone who perhaps has done something, with good intentions, that has caused bad luck (the weight of living) to the point where they can no longer bear it. The 'light' is the good intention brought by shooting the albatross, which turns out to be 'the sun in your eyes', or a bad thing disguised as good. 'Let it go' and 'shoot it down' refers to the decision between the risk of bad luck from shooting the albatross (or performing whichever action) and leaving things alone as they are (despite worries). 'Can you stand the person you've become?' is simply asking whether the risk was really worth taking. It's possible that this song is referring to a breakup in a relationship, or potentially even suicide. But there's not much to go on, that's purely guesswork.

I believe that this song is about someone who has a burden around them, something they did, or something about themselves that isnt necessarily positive. It tells the person to let it go, that they know that it is positive, and that they know the person is having trouble living with it. However, when the person tries to escape it, it still lurks with the person, in their mind, even though no one else can see it. "It's the sun in your eyes" refers to the fact that the person believes it's huge and you can't look at it for too long without getting burned. And yes, it does have heavy influence of the story in the above comment, but this was my primary interpretation.

I absolutely love Bastille and their song writing capabilities. I truly hope that I will be able to write as good songs as they do.

The Mariner connection is definitely there, and probably what the song was actually intended to be about, but I feel like the "weight of living" is the burden that we all, as people, carry on our shoulders. The weight of dreams that we once and the loss of innocence in "Can you stand the person you've become?" When we look back on how we've lived, we realize that what we have done could have always been done better; with more effort, in a way. The albatross is hovering above every one of us, taunting us in the fact that our short, single lives were wasted if we haven't done anything truly worthwhile.

Albatross, as in Samuel Coleridge's famous poem 'Rime of Ancient Mariner', is usually used as a symbol of reminder one's sins. I think the song's about the fact everyone of us has an albatross around our necks. There's always something that we regret, something that we'd wanna' change if we had a chance. The song says to "Shoot it down" and "Let it go.." symbolizing the fact that it's time we let it go. It's time we forget the past, shed our regrets and look for the future, shoot the albatross.... Just an interpretation...

This song might be about, you guessed it, someone under the weight of living. I don't know about the UK, but the title is "The Weight Of Living Pt. 1", just clarifing. Someone is suffering and their life isn't going their way. I'm drawing some inspiration from "The Weight Of Living Pt. 2". The speaker is trying to comfort them. Saying: "Your albatross, let it go" The someone is hiding their feelings, "Though it's still soaring above your head, It's out if site and none shall see".

I believe this is about someone about to commit suicide, and that it's ironically called weight of living because s/he's going to kill themselves. The albatross is being all the bad things this person had done or it is a person trying to persuade them to not commit suicide. The light that is calling them to die. This person is denying to help the albatross is trying to give him if it is not the other possibility. The sun in their eyes is their ignorance and them denying the truth.

Or at least that is my interpretation...

I completely agree with the mariner connection by LR but i actually think the light is hope, as light is commonly used to represent that. And the sun in your eyes is the part of you that's not ready to give up on life despite how much you hate yourself and how much you regret. Though LR's opinion is good too.

You're carrying your past which can't be changed around with you throughout the years. You want to forget but there are constant reminders. You want to hide your past from other people but you seem to be having a hard time hiding it from yourself. It's time to let it go instead of carrying something around that you can't change.
