"It’s taken a lot to forgive you Oh it’s taken me so long I tried in vain to forget you Oh, I tried everything" He's tried hard to forgive himself and even tried to forget his demons, but that made it even harder to accept them.
"And I can’t be with you I don’t even want to I just wish your ghosts were gone 'Cause I’m ready to love I’ve been guarded long enough" He doesn't want to be with this part of himself that makes him feel this darkness all the time. He wants his demons gone because he's been keeping them to himself and he's finally ready to accept it and let go.
