The Terror Lyrics
However long they love you
We are all standing alone
The terror’s in our heads
We don't control the controls
I turn to face the sun
We are still standing alone
At last we'll sing by the terror
It helps us hold the controls
[Chorus: x2]
We’ll sing in the sunshine
We'll laugh every day
We’ll sing 'cause love will save us
The sunshine every day
Your voice says yes, but I can't go on
Your voice says yes, but I can go more
What gives judgement the final word
When at once the sacred word can't be heard
We are all standing alone
The terror’s in our heads
We don't control the controls
We are still standing alone
At last we'll sing by the terror
It helps us hold the controls
We’ll sing in the sunshine
We'll laugh every day
We’ll sing 'cause love will save us
The sunshine every day
Your voice says yes, but I can go more
What gives judgement the final word
When at once the sacred word can't be heard

This is a song that, like much of the album it's on, revolves around existential dread, fear of death, and the feelings of intense isolation these ideas usually foster. Loneliness and death are inescapable, and the only way to keep going is to find kinship in these fears and the limitations shared by all peoples. It ends, however, by suggesting that even that solace is fleeting and does little to change the outcome.
The song is about feeling that you are not in control.
But pushing through anyway
