Crooked Young Lyrics
Believe in no one!
Hallelujah, well I'm saved
Just a dozen steps and 28 days
It's a miracle, I'll be born again
With the Lord as my Shepard
I will find a way
Fuck your faith.
No one's gonna save you.
Fuck your faith.
There's no hope for us
We speak in tongues, blacker than the sun
No death can touch the crooked young
There's no hope for us
We speak in tongues, blacker than the sun
No death can touch the crooked young
The crooked young
We don't sleep, we don't eat
We speak in tongues
We can't die, we're dead inside
No death can touch the crooked young
Believe in no one!
But yourself!
The faceless won't save you
The clouds won't hear your fucking prayers.
There's no hope for us
We speak in tongues, blacker than the sun
No death can touch the crooked young
Hallelujah, I'm saved
It's a miracle, thank you Jesus
Hallelujah, I'm saved
Fuck your faith.
Fuck your faith.
Just a dozen steps and 28 days
It's a miracle, I'll be born again
With the Lord as my Shepard
I will find a way
No one's gonna save you.
Fuck your faith.
We speak in tongues, blacker than the sun
No death can touch the crooked young
We speak in tongues, blacker than the sun
No death can touch the crooked young
The crooked young
We speak in tongues
We can't die, we're dead inside
No death can touch the crooked young
But yourself!
The faceless won't save you
The clouds won't hear your fucking prayers.
We speak in tongues, blacker than the sun
No death can touch the crooked young
It's a miracle, thank you Jesus
Hallelujah, I'm saved
Fuck your faith.
Fuck your faith.

This song is a direct criticism of the 12 step program to treat addiction. "Just a dozen steps and 28 days". For those not familiar with the 12 steps, the main pillar of the program is accepting god as your savior in various forms and admitting that you are powerless without him. This song is basically saying that there are some of us who have support in other places like friends and family and not in the "faceless" (god). As another user already pointed out, the parts about praising jesus are pure sarcasm.
Oli- "After the last touring cycle, I was in a bad place, a really, really bad place," Sykes says. "I went to get help. I don't know what I was suffering from, to be honest, but the underlying thing was ADHD. It was leading me to self medicate. But one of the first things I was asked to do was believe in God, to accept God into my life and let him help me. I didn't understand why I'd need something that in my opinion doesn't exist to get better. I've got a family, I've got friends, I've got a...

I didn't understand why I'd need something that in my opinion doesn't exist to get better. I've got a family, I've got friends, I've got a life. I've been fortunate enough not to live in a poverty stricken world. Why should I have to believe in that to get better? When I say: 'Fuck your faith, no one's gonna save you,' it's like — you need to do it on your own. If you're sick, or you're ill, or there's something wrong with you, don't wait on some all powerful force or a miracle to save you, because it's not going to happen. You've got to put the groundwork in yourself."

Personally, I think this song means that no faith is going to help you in life if you don't believe in yourself first.
This song, among many others is very anti religious. It's critical of the 12-step program, as others said, so I won't get into that. But it's very clearly a criticism of that as well as those who blindly follow religion. "We speak in tongues" is obviously about the religious crazy people who "speak in tongues" at church and whatnot.
The first verse is all sarcastic, he's facetiously saying that the religious program works. Then all the "Fuck your faith" express his real anger and frustration with organized religion.
"There's no hope for us... blacker than the sun, no death can touch the crooked young" is the only lyric where it's not explicitly obvious what he's talking about. I think he means that those people who blindly believe and put their faith in something invisible or fake are lost with no hope. He refers to them as "the crooked young", because it's often the younger religious individuals who are the most fervent, and that makes them the most sad and terrifying. "Blacker than the sun" probably is just referring to their hearts and morals and how they do and preach such immoral hate.
I honestly don't see how anyone could possibly think Oli is religious, not if you look at all his lyrics and give a cursory listen or read to his many interviews.
The bits where he is singing about Jesus, and stuff like that, are sarcasm to me. I personally think this is a rejection of Christianity. Just my opinion.
yeah the " thank you jesus " may either be sarcasm or the voices of those who got " healed " by jesus

Also, the guy who asked about the 28 days: "A 12-step program while in rehab for 28 days. Also all of the 12-step programs are based solely on finding god and using religion to kick your "demons" and overcome them. Fucking BS. Whatever happened to willpower?"
Originally this song is about unleashing your demons, more like God, where Oli sang "Thank you Jesus" he was being sarcastic, this song is basically anti-religious. This whole album is anti-religious.
i feel like its two people (a christian and an athiest) arguing about who's faith is correct.
Probably a song about how God has let you down. I can't think of it being anything else
i dont get this either, oli seems to have faith in jesus in his songs, but in ones like this he doesnt according to his lyrics. to me this song hes bluntly saying ur faith wont save you.. i dont get it.
he sometimes mentions god in his songs because his fanbase has believers too .

@mikeyk I'm pretty sure all of his references to a god in any of his songs are either critical, sarcastic, figurative, or just a biblical reference. None of what I've seen/heard would suggest that he believes in a god.

@mikeyk Oli is what I consider the exact opposite of a "believer". I'm not sure what songs your thinking of but Im certain you have misinterpreted the lyrics.

@malekmalshi I would like to know why any christian would be in his fanbase? Do they not understand what he is talking about or are they just pretending to be believers?... hilarious either way.

"Just a dozen steps and 28 days" What does that mean? What does it symbolize?
"Just a dozen steps." I believe hes talking about Alcohol Anonymous and how they have 12 steps to give up alcohol. And 28 days I think is how long you have to complete it. And how AA always pushes you towards god..
