Backyard Skulls Lyrics
All our secrets are smothered in dirt, underneath paving stones
Lying, waiting to be told
Some stay hidden, while some get found
Like a long lost soul, like a skull beneath the ground
Backyard skulls, deep beneath the ground
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
Here lies the first time that I was wrong
And there is still no sign, no exes mark the spot
Of the ancient encounters with foreign skin
All but perished by now
But you can't erase the grin from those
Backyard skulls, deep beneath the ground
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
Through patio doors, lies century upon century
Of skulls untold, as hushed the suburban adultery
Below our homes, underneath the lawns we keep
White silent skulls, are smiling at the hipocrisy
Backyard skulls, deep beneath the ground
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
Backyard skulls, deep beneath the ground
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
Deep enough to never be found
Deep enough to never be found
Lying, waiting to be told
Some stay hidden, while some get found
Like a long lost soul, like a skull beneath the ground
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
And there is still no sign, no exes mark the spot
Of the ancient encounters with foreign skin
All but perished by now
But you can't erase the grin from those
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
Of skulls untold, as hushed the suburban adultery
Below our homes, underneath the lawns we keep
White silent skulls, are smiling at the hipocrisy
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
Backyard skulls, deep beneath the ground
All those backyard skulls, are not deep enough to never be found
Deep enough to never be found
Deep enough to never be found

He said in a small live performance that this song is based on a book and is about infidelity, which would make sense, the backyards skulls are the secrets they hold between each other. Great tune, too
The lines about "suburban adultery" and "smiling at the hypocrisy" make sense in this context. I also really like the double meaning in "no exes mark this spot"

To me, the song is about hiding things about yourself that others might find embarrassing.. Backyard skulls = skeletons in the closet. The message of the song is that our SO will discover our "backyard skulls" that are "not deep enough to never be found", so we might as well admit to our own imperfections and let them decide where to go from there.
