I can't believe there are no comments on this song. Well, rather than just literally interpret it, I like to think he's talking about the girl as a "mermaid" as in she's completely different than the rest, magical and enchanting.
I think these lyrics are a play on the saying "There are plenty of fish in the sea." The speaker was exhausted from bad luck in relationships when he suddenly met a "mermaid," an exceptional girl who was more perfect for him than he imagined anyone could be.
