I don't agree with all the lyrics posted above and sent an edit lyrics email that is pending. So as of 7-17-13 they were incorrect. Having heard this song over and over as I read along, I believe the following is 99% accurate. Incredible song!!

I have to think this is about maybe giving up a girl for the music life. I see the other posters’ point about "I'd be alright, if I could just see you" being about a dream or goal, but I go right back to it being about a girl when it hits - "Hold me again, don’t count mistakes, I lost track of them"

I see this as if he gave up on someone but it still hurts him, and he wants to know if she's ok and he’ll feel better if he could just see her.

And I think since they are a successful band already, “A miracle mile where does it lead to?” might mean that where have you gone if you don’t have the people you love with you. Where does it lead to??

Oh, and what a great song!! I'm forever amazed how a song’s lyrics on paper like this can turn into a great jam. Then add in some meaning.

For me this song is about losing track of your dreams, or what you set out to do in life: not really gunning for what you want can be seen as shooting with the safety on (verse 1).

The second verse talks about getting off the beaten track and down to what one wants to do - in this case, it seems to be talking about the music industry, saying that if you start from scratch (you're not already famous), you can't be doing it for the money. You have to be doing it because you want to.

Being underground and coming up for air is symbolic of burying yourself under what is more sensible to do, and eventually returning to what your passion is.

In this light, the "get outside, get out over the world" bridge is encouraging the listener to pursue what they truly want to do with their lives, whatever ends up happening ("it may be problem and it may be peace of mind").

For me, the "I'd me alright, if I could just see you" line could refer to a role model, or to the original dream or goal one had before everything went off track.

A big well done to whoever put these lyrics up! They are the most accurate lyrics I've found so far!

The only part I'm not sure of is the "Put your head ? down and breathe one breath at a time" The way the music is at that moment makes it really hard to hear what he's saying.

I think he's talking about when he says "I’ll be alright, if I could just see you come up for air, come up for air a miracle mile where does it lead to? Come up for air, come up for air" A person he loves and he will be alright if he sees that person taking care of themselves.

I think to me it's about his career as a singer in regards to how he had decided to become one, maybe he misses whoever it is he's with and perhaps it could be a little suffocating (the music business) and when he asks "where does it lead to?" In reference to the miracle mile, maybe he's talking about the band's success and his concern on where it'll pop up.
