Summertime Lyrics

Summertime
And the livin' is easy.
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high.
You're daddy's rich.
And your mom is good lookin'
So hush little baby.
Don't you cry

One of these mornings
You’re gonna rise up singing
Then you spread your wings
And fly to the sky

But till the mornin’
There’s nothing can harm you
With mama and daddy
Standing by

One of these mornings
You’re gonna rise up singing
Then spread your wings
And fly to the sky

But till that morning
There’s nothin’ can harm you
With mama and daddy
Standing by

Cover art for Summertime lyrics by Big Mama Thornton

I can only guess that this would be similar to a negro spiritual where a poor black mother is holding her young child (in the middle of a very unfair and prejudicial world) letting him know that there shall be more than work (picking cotton?) in his life, for there are always the scant, but special, times during the summer where everyone relaxes, lets go, and truly lives.Until those moments of sporatic paradise, s/he is protected from harm by her loving mamma and daddy. Not sure, though, so don't crucify the attempt please...
