Line of Fire Lyrics

What would you do
If it all came back to you?
Each crest of each wave
Bright as lightning

What would you say
If you had to leave today?
Leave everything behind
Even though for once, you're shining

Standing on higher ground
When you hear the sounds
You realize its just the wind
And you notice it matters who and what you let under your skin

If put to the test
Would you step back from the line of fire?
Hold everything back
All emotions and desires

Convince yourself
Someone else
Hide from the world
Your lack of confidence
What you choose to believe in
Dictates your rise or your fall
Dictates your rise or your fall

No one else around you
No one to understand you
No one to hear your calls
Look through all your dark corners
You're backed up against the wall
Step back from the line of fire

What would you do
If it all came back to you?
Each crest of each wave
Bright as lightning
I'd do the same as you would
Do the same as you x 3
I'd do the same as you x 3

What you choose to believe in
Dictates your rise or your fall

No one else around you
No one to understand you
No one to hear your calls
Look through all your dark corners
And you're backed up against the wall
Step back from the line of fire x 8

Step back...x 3

“It’s about growing up and taking responsibility in that moment when all of a sudden your life changes, you’re in a new situation,” González says. “Your ideals are challenged, and you have to think things through from a new angle.” ~ Jose Gonzalez Composer & Lead Singer of 'Junip' I lost my son in 2013 & my life changed forever. Everything was different, some friends became very distant, my family changed, I now have only one child. I hosted every Thanksgiving & Christmas for 25 yrs.,for my family & my nieces & nephews, now it is too difficult for them to attend for I remind them of that empty chair that brings sadness to them all. I must adjust & try not to dwell on my grief, self pity & feelings of abandonment by friends & family. I must "step back from the line of fire" so that I may love & nurture old & new relationships & live. I must learn how to live again.

This is the official JUNIP "Line of Fire" lyrics from their vinyl release. The word "crest" has been misspelled by the publisher, so appears as "creast" instead.

I think Gonzalez means that we fight too much, we give in to our feelings of self-entitlement, superiority, judgment, and give out a lot of violence. Then all that violence we give, can come back to us, and kill us (metaphorically, or not). So he recommends to try to break the chain of hate.

My Interpretation

stepping back we can step forward. anger; we fall on our own sword.

To me, I feel like this is a song about stepping away from desire and from fear. It's about making the decision to learn to love oneself and find comfort and peace within oneself and to no longer rely on belief or external validation.

My Interpretation

I agree! Look your fears/darkness in the face -- own it, feel it, and let it go.

I believe this song is about the choice to detach or hit an emotional bottom.

My Interpretation

"What you choose to believe in Takes you as you fall."

There is also another version on other sites that says, "Takes you much too far."

I believe both of these interpretations to be wrong. If you actually listen to the words he is singing something different, but I can't seem to figure it out. I wish bands still printed official lyrics in their album booklets.

Some will agree, and at same time some will say that this topic is totally exploited but, the meaning of this song, after listening to it for the first time in the Finale Promo of Breaking Bad, has only one meaning for me: "All action has its consequences"

Song Meaning

I think he might sing:

"What you choose to believe in takes you right to fall"

Seems to make sense as well, I guess?

My Opinion

Could it mean that someone has been hurt so bad emotionally that she just had to break off and start a new life over somewhere else?
