I think he is saying that people warned him about love & the dangers of it & he thought he listened to them but when he actually got his heart broken he now realises what they were talking about & it was more terrible than he ever imagined. So he is basically saying "Tell them they were right about love" This is my interpretation & experience, probably interlinked.
