Durban Skies Lyrics
All we've got to be thankful for
All we've got to be thankful for
In the heat, try to love these streets
In this town, it all went down
On chromosomes in sepia tones
In my mind, in my mind
Where you lead your lives
Before from our small island
Brought right back to these shores
To these shores, to these shores
It's alive, It's alive
When I see it through your eyes
It's alive, It's alive
Now I understand your lies
When you take me there
You show me the city
I see it through your eyes
When you take me there
We drive through the city
Beneath the Durban skies
All that I've got to be thankful for
On the day you made your vows
The heavens open, rain poured down
It poured down, down, down
Grey and brown, the seventies
The suits you wore, and the ones you love
Were so young, were so young, boy you were so young
It's alive, It's alive
When I see it through your eyes
It's alive, It's alive
Now I understand your lies
When you take me there
You show me the city
I see it through your eyes
When you take me there
We drive through the city
Beneath the Durban skies
All that we've got to be thankful for
Oh, all that we've got to be thankful for
All we've got to be thankful for
It's alive, It's alive
When I see it through your eyes
It's alive, It's alive
Now I understand your lies
When you take me there
You show me the city
I see it through your eyes
When you take me there
We drive through the city
Beneath the Durban skies
When you take me there,
When you take me there,
When you take me there,
It's alive, It's alive
When you take me there
It's alive, It's alive
All we've got to be thankful for

It's alive, It's alive

Dan's parents are from a city called Durban in South Africa. It's the city where his Mother and Father met, fell in love and got married. The song is about them and how they've told their story to Dan, how he imagined their story and Durban to be and how their story comes to life when he visits Durban.

Ah, I've been wondering. Since the mentioning of 'chromosomes' I presumed it must have meant Dan was looking into the lives of people who had genetic conditions, and when he said 'it's alive' and 'see it through your eyes' he meant that he really felt sorry for them and was showing empathy and compassion for them. I know it's a stupid theory but that's just what my mind associated the song with. Now I've read your meaning, it's really cleared it up. Thank you. :)
