Heavy Feet Lyrics

Powder in your hair
Staples in your jeans
Fireworks at the water
You were holy

A styro-foam cup
Held between your teeth
Telling me how you're going to outlive your body

What you said I wrote it down
It won't say, it won't speak the same
Maybe I know better than
To read more than what's written

After everything
Left in the sun, shivering

Gathering your storm
I talk to fill the space
You know where so and so was, when they were our age?
Every night you seem
To talk me out of everything

Careful what you say next
Don't waste a single drop
What you said I wrote it down
It won't say, it won't speak the same

After everything
Left in the sun, shivering

What you said I wrote it down
It won't say, it won't speak the same
Maybe I know better than
To read more than what's there

After everything
Left in the sun, shivering

Seems, to me, as if the song is about finding someone and then the process of them leaving and how everything they said comes to linger(in the speakers head), even though they are not physically there anymore.

First verse is about coming to know them, love them and ultimately why it will be so difficult to let them go(they're great).

"Fire works at the water" "You were holy" "Styrofoam cup held between your teeth "Telling me how you are going to outlive your body."

Second verse is things getting even more intense and heavy. His intensity is causing him to grip too tight, and it's only pushing her away. The speaker who is "falling", is reading to much into everything and insecurity and doubt is talking him out of living normally. His confidence is ruined and he is struggling to do anything at all.

"Gathering your storm I talk to fill the space You know where so and so was, when they were our age? Every night you seem To talk me out of everything

Careful what you say next Don't waste a single drop What you said I wrote it down It won't say, it won't speak the same"

The final verse is him recollecting on her now being gone and how he blames her, but knows neither party is really guilty of anything. He fell too hard and should have known better to, not only fall, but to think gripping was the answer to falling and losing love. Now all he is left with is the memories of all their conversation and all the mistakes he perceives he had made. Which is unfortunate because she may have loved him, but just couldn't stay for some reason which has nothing to do with him personally. He is saying he should have known better than to take it personally.

"Careful what you say next Don't waste a single drop What you said I wrote it down It won't say, it won't speak the same

After everything Left in the sun, shivering

What you said I wrote it down It won't say, it won't speak the same Maybe I know better than To read more than what's there"

Or, it's aout losing a loved one to illness and death?

I can't really piece together one coherent meaning from the verses...but little bits stand out to me, and reflect what I have felt at times. Talking, drinking, writing meaningless words down...I like this song, a lot. :-)

To me, there seems to be two different ways to interpret the song. The first being that the singer is writing about a close friend/relative who is going to die soon (which makes sense with the context of the rest of the album, esp. "Three Months"). They're saying that their body is going to die before their spirit, which indicates some sort of a disease. So the singer writes down all the things this person says so that they don't forget, but the words can't be spoken or else they lose all their meaning. Or, as is indicated by the last line, the singer will attach more meaning to the words than was intended. An alternative would be that their close friend/relative is simply leaving or breaking up with them. Doesn't seem to fit as well with everything else, but it's always an angle.

Agreed. Nicely written.

My interpretation is that the song is about an alcoholic friend, lover or loved one, who is near death or just passed. Reminiscing about drinking in their youth this person remembers them talking like their invincible living forever.

“Powder in your hair Staples in your jeans Fireworks at the water You were holding a styro-foam cup Held between your teeth Telling me how you're going to outlive your body”

They turn into an alcoholic and this person is writing down everything were saying to them when they were drunk good or bad cause they can’t remember. But I lean more towards bad because of the lines

“Gathering your storm I talk to fill the space You know where so and so was When they were our age And every night you seem To talk me out of everything”

And at this point the person is drunk and verbally seriously hurting them

“Careful what you say next, Don't waste a sin-gle drop What you said I wrote it down, Won't say, won't speak the same”

The chorus I think circulates their entire relationship which ever kind it is family, friend, lover and all the time, chances and energy lost.

When trying to decipher the meaning behind heavy feet by local natives, I would come to realize that my intuitive guess would be closest to any other interpretation. The beginning opens with a description of this person that would come to play an integral role in the life of the speaker, but this period was only temporary. It seems the speaker was getting caught up in the moment, feeling inspired by the fireworks, the physical appearance of what I’d guess to be a girl. The words that she spoke felt so special that he wrote them down. Whenever he recites the ideas to another person, he realizes that the words she spoke were not groundbreaking, it was that he wanted/expected them to be: His attraction enhanced her personality. This likely led to a relationship, but as recited in the chorus, he was left in the sun shivering. The warmth that brought him to her was deceiving: there wasn’t a connection there, there was a love wasted. In the next verse it seems that this issue is coming to a front: Awkward conversation, mutual recognition of the disparity between the two. A seemingly sarcastic next verse ensues, as the speaker notes that the girl should be careful in what she says because a single drop shouldn’t be wasted. Her articulate nature that he initially enjoyed is a facade created by non-sobriety and the freedom it gives her, and with her sobriety comes the lack of confidence to communicate effectively. In the end I feel that there was a confounding dissonance between the image he initially had of this person, and what she turned out to be. The feeling of attachment is unfortunately there, and he is left in her sun, shivering, really to blame for his blindness.

I see this clearly as someone who has recently broken up with a girl (which is what most of the CD is about). It sounds to me as though he is reminiscing on a great memory of the two of them, only to interject with something she wrote to him that kills his pride. She ruins him without notice: After everything Left in the sun shivering That cold hearted bitch let him have it for no reason. After everything he did for her. It's a two way street. Girls do it, guys do it. Sucks...
