Sweetheart, What Have You Done to Us Lyrics

Sweetheart, what have you done to us?
I turned my back and it turned to dust
What have you done?

Oh please just come here, don't fight with me
And I admit, I think you may have broken it, will you admit? Oh oh

If all you wanted was songs for you
Here it goes, after all that you put me through
Here’s one for you

And don’t call me lover
It’s not enough
It’s got to be tough, cynical stuff
Follow my words to the end of our love

And God you were the one who told me not to be so English

Sweetheart, what have you done to our love?

This song is about the bitterness and misery he feels toward a woman who broke his heart. He'd rather she not call him a lover, but just end it and leave it. "Here's one for you, after all that you put me through" he's written a song about her finally. "sweetheart, what have you done to us/our love?" refers to how their fights and bitter end have ruined eachother.

It could be a normal breakup song but one line stands out and makes the song pull together as a story about opening up. Just my opinion, but when he says "And God you were the one who told me not to be so English" It appears that his lover made him open up to her, and that he was initially hesitant, so now he knows he was right in the first place to have been slow, but now he's had his heartbroken when it wasn't necessary.
