It’s a mistake
But go ahead and take a side
But watch how you choose
Or be headed for a ride
‘Cause I just don’t know if I could
I can’t stop what you began
I can’t fight for what you began
You’ve opened the gates
Now face the other side
Just go on it’s cool
Now head into the fire
I just don’t know if I could
I can’t stop what you began
I can’t fight for what you began
I know what’s in site
For you again
Switch on your game
Stop wasting all your time
‘Cause surprise it’s you
Who’ll face what you decide
I think I’d have known about you
I can’t stop what you began
I can’t fight for what you began
I know what’s in site
I know your fate
I know I can’t stop what you began
But go ahead and take a side
But watch how you choose
Or be headed for a ride
‘Cause I just don’t know if I could
I can’t stop what you began
I can’t fight for what you began
You’ve opened the gates
Now face the other side
Just go on it’s cool
Now head into the fire
I just don’t know if I could
I can’t stop what you began
I can’t fight for what you began
I know what’s in site
For you again
Switch on your game
Stop wasting all your time
‘Cause surprise it’s you
Who’ll face what you decide
I think I’d have known about you
I can’t stop what you began
I can’t fight for what you began
I know what’s in site
I know your fate
I know I can’t stop what you began

I'm reminded of stories when at the beginning of a story someone is about to fulfill an important task/mission/objective/goal. And before that character is about to try and achieve that goal they tell someone else if they die or fail they need to carry on for them and do what they couldn't. Therefore creating the "reluctant hero" trope. I think this song is from the yet-to-be reluctant hero's perspective. He doesn't want to be put in the middle of something he isn't involved in. Somebody else started shit and he isn't going to fight or pick up the pieces.
@MyTooCents This is it. I think the song title --and lyrics of course-- points to the song being specifically about the reluctant war hero.

FFS people, don't make every song interpretation a psychological projection into your relationship problems.

it's spelled gauze lol
I don't believe so, but could this be political? Naaaah surely not.
For me, the meaning of this song is about a guy who is in love with a girl he can't be with anymore. The girl fell in love with him FIRST (I can't stop what YOU began), he fell in love second. She doesn't want to be with him anymore. "I just don't know if I could" (let myself fall in love) "You've opened the gates (to love), now face the other side." When he says, "Just go on, it's cool, now head into the fire" (just go with the flow because you love her and it just feels right. The fire, meaning he's going into a relationship that will end and he's left by her and the relationship is over and he's still in love with her but there is nothing he can do about it). Switch on your game, stop wasting all your time." (Switch up what you're doing. Stop sulking in the fact that she doesn't want to be with you. Stop wasting your time and get off your ass and do something with your life.) "Surprise, It's you who'll face what you decide)" The surprise is that the relationship is over and you're still in love with her but can't have her.
Again, this is just my interpretation of the song.
I think it's about rape, but not sure.. "I can't stop what you began I can't fight for what you began", so much violence and brutal feelings come up with this phrase so it's possible it's refering to loving someone very much, but when she don't reply to your feelings, you take this whole emotion to a different level by raping her
I think this lyrics is about a girl who has to choose from a friend with benefit and an ex and the benefit guy know she will choose her ex (It's a mistake but go ahead and take a side, but watch how you choose, Or be headed for a ride). The friends with benefit is in love with her and doesn't just see sex( I can't stop what you began You've opened the gates Now face the other side). Friend with benefit is use to her decision which is her ex who is a jerk (Just go on it's cool Now head into the fire). Friend with benefit is asking to stop repeating the same act and end up in same place 'broken up' (Switch on your game Stop wasting all your time 'Cause surprise it's you Who'll face what you decide I think I'd have known about you). Repeat that he in love and can't move on from her......
Personally i'm going through this a guy is choosing between me n his ex
I think this is about truly understanding why you believe a particular opinion whether it be political or spiritual or whatever. If you can't defend your point then why do you believe it? It's about really thinking something through before you express it. Do you still feel that way when you "face the other side"? If you can't you'll " be taken for a ride". When it comes down to it, its you who will " face what you decide." So many people identify with certain views without really thinking them through. And for some people there opinions define their identities, and so challenging their opinions, is a insult to their identity. So if you really understand why you believe them, there's no issue, but if you don't, " I can't fight for what you began, but I know what's inside for you again, and that self reflection, you will face what you decide.
Also, you have to own the choices you make. No one can do that for you. So be sure about your decisions cause you have to live with the consequences
That's it I think. After reading everyone's comments, they are all stories or ideas about choices and their consequences.
Feels like a continuation from the situation in their song 'Poltergeist' the 3rd track on their album. It's time the narcissistic or abusive person faces the music! They can choose the side they show the world but everyone has cracked wise to it, in otherwords everyone is seeing through their facade. So in this song they are saying "go ahead! Play that game! You are just proving how crazy you are!"
"I can't stop what you began I can't fight for what you began I know what's inside For you again" This sounds kinda like they can't fight the negative feelings the abusive person has planted the seeds of in their mind.
