Au Revoir Lyrics

You know what I think's really sad?
I know how really sad you are
I'm probably gonna leave real soon
Just wanted to let you know before I say au revoir, au revoir
I bet you don't even know what that means
Au revoir, au revoir I bet you don't even know what that means

She says, "Oh, it's French. I know what it means
You don't have to be so mean. If you wanna leave, why don't you go?"
Right before she walks away I'm pretty sure I hear her say
"Adios, adios. I bet you think I don't know what that means
Adios, adios. I bet you think I don't know what that means"

Rock and roll, rock and roll
You probably don't understand what I mean
Rock and roll, rock and roll
You probably don't understand what I mean

She says that it's French, I know what you mean
Just thought I should let you know before I say au revoir

Nooooooooo there's so much more. This dudes leaving for his rock tour, right, and he's telling the girl that he's sad because she's so torn up about him leaving. But he's letting her know somewhat in advance that he has to go. He knows that she's going to have a difficult time with all of this. And then she gets pissed because she thinks he's leaving and calling quits on their relationship so she flat out says goodbye. She's thinking he's going to forget about her. And then the dude gets all worked up because she doesn't understand rock n' roll and what it means to him. And she's not listening. It's absolutely heartbreaking. Or at least that's what I hear. It's not apathetic, it's one big frustrating misconception.

This is an amazing introduction to their new album. Immediately I could tell that they had improved on their already fairly unique sound.

I think this song is quite obviously about a farewell to a lover. He wants to leave her, but is hesitant to do so, so she ends up doing it for him. The lyrics make some pretty funny use of self-deprecation when he accuses her of not knowing what "au revoir" means. It's as if he is making fun of himself for being condescending to her, and she confirms his condescension when she says "Adios, adios, I bet you think I don't know what that means." I think a lot of people can say they've been in a similar situation to these lyrics. This is a fantastic song, and as the previous commenter said, a great way to begin the new record.

So..she left him b/c she assumed he would forget about her while he's touring. He probably felt vulnerable and anxious in general about the tour and now he has to go on tour with a broken heart. Can't blame her for worrying though, the media paints the music industry to look like a sleazy land full of casual sex and drugs.

anyone make a connection between Funny You Should Ask and this song? the lyrics there mention a girl named chelsea that took two semesters in france. overthinking this? a bridge too far?

I dunno about rock tour, but I think this is cleverer(and less literal) than it seems at first read and the key is the rock and roll section. Essentially, he says au revoir, I bet you don't even know what that means, and she mistakes him thinking he's saying she doesn't understand the language and then makes fun of him, mimicing what she thinks he was doing, saying adios, I bet you think I don't know what that means.

Then he launches into the key, rock and roll etc etc. Which to me says there is a fundamental thing that music means to me that you don't understand. By the same token, she doesn't understand that saying au revoir is about the pain of leaving, the gulf of lack of understanding and not the difference in language.

Perhaps I think this because there are people in my life where my relationships with them have fit this perfectly. They don't now and never will understand what I mean, no matter how I shout it. These relationships could be saved in theory, but the assumptions of the others that my lamentations are instead snarky jokes at their expense indicates exactly how they see the world, and why they are unable to sustain any relationship, with me or otherwise.
