i think this song is definitely about religion, and the possession of someone. the lyrics mention notes on religion, the devil and dark themes. i also think it’s about accepting the dark fate after something bad that God is punishing her for! this is one of my favourites of halcyon and my number one favourite of the deluxe edition!
This song used to creep me out with its meaning but I found out that ellie goulding is jewish so when she says "in my house Ruben theres a sound of him in the darkest words" I think she's meaning Reuben which was one of joseph's twelve sons who (though he did many great things) did have an affair. I think this entire song is about an affair because she says she knows she's sinned, etc. This is a great song though I absolutely adore it
