Starlight Lyrics

I said oh my, what marvelous tune
It was the best night, never would forget how we moved
the whole place was dressed to the nines,
and we were dancing dancing
Like we're made of starlight
Like we're made of starlight

I met Bobby on the boardwalk, summer of '45
Picked me up late one night at the window, he was 17 and crazy, running wild, wild
Can't remember what song he was playing when we walked in
The night we snuckinto a yacht club party
Pretending to be a dutchess and a prince

i said oh my, what marvelous tune
It was the best night, never would forget how we moved
the whole place was dressed to the nines,
and we were dancing dancing
Like we're made of starlight
Like we're made of starlight

he said "look at you, worrying so much about things you can't change
you'll spend your whole life singing the blues if you keep thinking away "
He was trying to skip rocks on the ocean, saying to me
"Don't you see the starlight starlight?
Don't you dream impossible things?"

like oh my, what marvelous tune
It was the best night, never would forget how we moved
the whole place was dressed to the nines,
and we were dancing dancing
Like we're made of starlight
Like we're made of starlight

Ooh ooh he's talking in crazy
Ooh ooh dancing with me
Ooh ooh we could get married
have ten kids and teach them how to dream

i said oh my, what marvelous tune
It was the best night, never would forget how we moved
the whole place was dressed to the nines,
and we were dancing dancing
Like we're made of starlight
Like we're made of starlight

like we dream impossible dreams
don't you see the starlight?
don't you dream impossible things?

this my favourite song by taylor swift, ever.

This song finds Swift singing about the romantic adventures of Ethel and Bobby Kennedy after coming across a photo of the pair dancing when they were teenagers. "She told The Wall Street Journal: "I get a lot of style inspiration from the 1960s, so I'll go and look at black and white pictures, and look at [photos from the] '50s and '60s, and I came across this picture of these two kids dancing at a dance. It immediately made me think of like how much fun they must have had that night. It was back in the late '40s. I ended up reading underneath that it was Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. And they were like 17. So I just kind of wrote that song from that place, not really knowing how they met or anything like that. And then her daughter Rory ended up coming to a show a couple weeks later and I told her about the song and she was like, you have to meet my mom. She would love to meet you. So that was kind of what that song was about."

Ethel and Bobby are the grandparents of Conor Kennedy, whom Taylor was dating whilst writing for Red. The songstress became especially close to Ethel Kennedy during their relationship.

This was co-produced by regular collaborator Nathan Chapman and Dann Huff, who has also worked with Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts. It was one of three tracks on Red, where Huff co-manned the boards. "I chose the artists and the producers because I like their style," Swift told USA Today. "I didn't choose them because I wanted to force my style on them; I chose them because I wanted to learn from them. So they're true collaborations, it's not just somebody else singing on one of my songs that sounds like one of my songs. It's a real mixture of the two influences."

I feel like this song just captures what Taylor encourages everyone to do. To live for the impossible and find a love that will make that possible.

I love this song!

My Opinion

this song is about Ethel

who's Ethel?

I agree with thrwmyhrtawy that this song was written for Ethel Kennedy, who really was 17 in 1945. Robert Kennedy was called "Bobby".

I mean, Robert Kennedy was 20, not 17 at that time, and they actually met at a ski resort, but considering Ethel adores Taylor (not sure if she still does since Taylor & Conor broke up) and all the other hints in the song that match, I think it's pretty clear. And I mean, having 11 kids is close enough to 10 haha.

Song Meaning

And "dressed to the nines" (dressed formally) could just refer to lavish Kennedy parties. I find this song really sweet, especially since Ethel never remarried.

I love how old-timey this song sounds. It takes you back.

Least favorite on the album.

My Opinion

Nothing wrong with not loving this song. I think RED is a fantastic album. I really love all the songs....but Starlight is likely the song I will skip the most. While I appreciate her writing, this one just doesn't do it for me. I still love Taylor Swift though!
