I'm Building a Fire Lyrics
I'm building a fire
to keep you warm
long after I retire.
'Cause this body is
bound to expire tonight, tonight.
And the embers will glow,
remind you what you already know:
that the night
is only a temporary absence
of light, of light, of light, of light.
In the morning you'll wake,
the ashes, the memory,
and the sun on your face.
And I will not seem so far away.
Arise, you're alive. Arise, you're alive.
to keep you warm
long after I retire.
'Cause this body is
bound to expire tonight, tonight.
remind you what you already know:
that the night
is only a temporary absence
of light, of light, of light, of light.
the ashes, the memory,
and the sun on your face.
And I will not seem so far away.
Arise, you're alive. Arise, you're alive.

I imagine this as a guy who works a lot or travels a lot sort of trying to make up for not always being there for his lover. It can also be about a guy thinking about what his wife will do after he's dead and how he will make plans for her to be taken care of but given what I know about ben gibbard, its more about just not being there physically while he's on tour, and wanting his lover to know that he is still with her in thought.
also its really a beautiful way to end the album and reminds me a lot of a lack of color from transalanticism.
