Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye cover) Lyrics
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
I told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and that's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
I'll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
(Somebody) That I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
(Somebody) That I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You told me you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
You didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
(Somebody) That I used to know
(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I
That I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Love the song - it is intelligent and done amazingly well as a performance. i find it interesting that Gotye was born AFTER LP records were replaced by other media, mainly cassette tapes. just wondered why he would reference 'records' which to him would not be current vernacular. perhaps it scanned or had more meaning than 'tapes', more meaning to oldies too. i grew up with records
Story of a bad breakup, basically.
I thnk this song has a very complex set of emotional reactions about the end of a relationship as he reflect upon it much later. it is subtle and sophisticated emotionally, and its not surprising so many comments ive read seem limited in their understanding of it. its also surprising that the music is not considered more in helping us to understand the meaning. the music is wistful, a bit melancholic and expresses hurt rather than anger, and longing for someone. The title too, gives clues to meaning. not a lover anymore, not a friend, just SWIUTK, into a relationship so deteriorated from what it was its heartbreaking to him. i think it helps interpreting the meaning by sticking to the lyrics and feelings expressed in them closely, and not speculating about what they did to eachother beyond whats there.
A man is missing a woman he used to love very much, and although they werent a good match, he loved her nonetheless. As he reflects, he expresses how he's been hurt by the way she ended it, and has cut him off the way she has. Instead of finding a way to stay connected in some way, maybe as friends in some way, she hasnt even tried...he finds now much later, he still misses her, perhaps still loves her a little, seems sorry it what wrong and wishes he could be ibn some kind of contact with her.
A woman sings the part from his past - not his current lover - the one who left him, and what she said to him...
he's pondering the meaning of what she said....it may have not worked out because he was not ready for her, was still too connected to someone he used to know. and now he turns those words around that she is the someone he used to know. she didnt want him hung up on his ex, and now shes the one in his past that hes still caring about allthough he knew they werent right for eachother.
