Outlines Lyrics

I'm half-remembered halfway across the world
Twice removed from my second home
The shadow of a ghost in an old haunt
With a lease on life 'cause I can't afford to own

When being young starts getting old
A new place saves face, or so I'm told
I'll be the new kid on an old block
A chalk outline on a playground blacktop

I'm just a moment
So don't let me pass you by
We could be a story in the morning
But we'll be a legend tonight

I'm just a moment
So don't let me pass you by
They can speak our names in a dead language
'Cause you and I, we're alive
But just for a moment

I'm twice the man that I thought I was yesterday
Half the time I'm a world away
A flicker of a soul casting silhouettes
On the face of a town that could not get me to stay

And when the spark's gone
Former lovers are just looking for a bus to throw me under
I'll be the new kid on an old block
A chalk outline on a playground blacktop

I'm just a moment
So don't let me pass you by
We could be a story in the morning
But we'll be a legend tonight

I'm just a moment
So don't let me pass you by
They can speak our names in a dead language
'Cause you and I, we're alive
But just for a moment
(Just for a moment)

When being young starts getting old
A new place saves face, or so I'm told
I'll be the new kid on an old block
A chalk outline on a playground blacktop

I'm just a moment
So don't let me pass you by
We could be a story in the morning
But a legend tonight
(We could be a legend tonight)

I'm just a moment
So don't let me pass you by
They can speak our names in a dead language
'Cause you and I, we're alive
But just for a moment
But just for the moment
Just for a moment

It may be about the speaker returning to a place he has bad ties/memories with (twice removed from a second home/new kids on an old block) and he has regrets either coming back or doung what he did in that place

My Interpretation

It took me a little time to try to figure it out but I think that...

Half remebered, half way across the world- means that it's been so long since he's actually settled down so half of the people he's interacted with remember him.

Twice removed from a second home- is that he wasn't around that much and that he hasnt been paying his monthly rent so they avicted him.

I feel like he was growing up faster than all his other friends, already getting a house when he says.

I'm twice the man that I thought I was yesterday.

I thought there was more to it because he says they were playing with chalk. And you outline bodies or things on the sidewalk.

I agree with albinoemo, that he was regreting the bad memories

It's a song to their fans. It's talking about the punk phase. There was a huge surge of punk music roughly a decade ago. A lot of those bands fell from the charts and people started to wonder if punk was dead. All Time Low along with quite a few big time punk bands continued to make music and continued to tour. Now that punk is starting to pick up steam and become more popular, they're seeing all these young kids get signed and it's irritating to be pigeonholed with these new bands.

When being young starts getting old A new pace saves face or so I’m told - They don't want to be seen as the same as all these young new punk bands that are popping up. If you listen to their music you can see a drastic change in the sound. They stayed true to who they are but they also wanted to show everyone what they're made of and what sets them apart.

Be the new kid, on an old block A chalk outline on a playground blacktop - They've done this all before but they're being treated like they're new to this.

The chorus is saying 'It doesn't matter what anyone says about us. We're alive! Let's enjoy this!' I think it was intended to break up the negative feelings in the song. The band is notorious for keeping things light hearted even when they're touching on something deep.

A flicker of a soul casting silhouettes On the face of a town that could not get me to stay - It's a flicker of a soul because they were losing steam. They were dealing with record label nightmares for awhile and they were getting some bad press. I believe, despite the fanbase they had here, they went and toured over seas.

And when the spark’s gone, former lovers just looking for a bus to throw me under - I'm pretty sure this line is to the fair-weather fans, the people who didn't stick by them in the tough times. I read a few articles about how they were 'trying to hard' or just 'didn't quite have it' 'they're no fall out boy'.

I feel the song is about someone who never stays with people for long because they’re afraid they’re going to hurt someone, but this song is about them telling their current lover that they dont want to hurt them but they don’t want to leave them either.
