Kevin Barnes actually did go to Christian school I believe. So did I, and I can easily recognize that this song is about his rejection of Christianity and all its pushers in his childhood. Pretty simple.
Also the song is a reaction to the repression of emotions and maybe "free" actions that religion has a part in. Example: the line "You're not going to vanish if you step out of line".
