To me, and this is my opinion so i'm entitled to it, this song is about straying from religion and finding contentment and peace outside of it. and feeling like you disappointed your parents because of it, but needing to get out. There are actually quite a few songs from fun. and the format in which nate refers to religion, or the lack there of.

Benson Hedges -- "holy ghosts, when do you come out to play/ cause if the lord is gonna find me he better start looking today"
One Foot -- "i happened to stumble upon a chapel last night / and i can't help but back up when i think of what happens inside" Seven Digit Pin Code -- "I wish that i believed in heaven/ I can't thank sunday school for that"
Threes - "yeah my life is just like religion - I'm making it up as i go"

I'm sure there's more but that's all i can think of right now. I cry every time i listen to this song because these are the things i think it's saying and they envelop everything i feel after personally deciding religion wasn't for me. It's so damn raw and emotional at the core.

Oceans is a little harder to notice, but it has the same thing going on. "Oh you've got flaws, that you won't admit / Oh you say that it's a sin, that I don't believe in ...(aah...)" So it's either love or god. I think we know which, given Nate's tendencies.
