Never Far Behind Lyrics
One day, I thought, I would be just like you
I know now that you were never satisfied
Now that I'm grown I am nothing like you
I see the world with my own eyes
With so much love all around you
How could you never realize?
The ground above, the sky below you
Must beat the hell out of being alive
How many times can I forgive you?
If you are always on my mind
I've tried so hard to outrun you
You are never far behind
I never thought I would lose you
Where you have gone I will not find
I know the search cannot continue
I feel the loss as time goes by
With so much love all around you
How could you never realize?
The ground above, the sky below you
Must beat the hell out of being alive
How many times can I forgive you?
If you are always on my mind
I've tried so hard to outrun you
You are never far behind
How many times can I forgive you?
If you are always on my mind
I've tried so hard to outrun you
You are never far behind
I know now that you were never satisfied
Now that I'm grown I am nothing like you
I see the world with my own eyes
With so much love all around you
How could you never realize?
The ground above, the sky below you
Must beat the hell out of being alive
If you are always on my mind
I've tried so hard to outrun you
You are never far behind
Where you have gone I will not find
I know the search cannot continue
I feel the loss as time goes by
With so much love all around you
How could you never realize?
The ground above, the sky below you
Must beat the hell out of being alive
If you are always on my mind
I've tried so hard to outrun you
You are never far behind
If you are always on my mind
I've tried so hard to outrun you
You are never far behind

"One day I thought I would be just like you...Now that I am grown I am nothing like you"
Though parts of it sound like they could be talking about a lover, it seems like the song is describing a strained relationship with your father. Though the narrator is fed up with him, he keeps forgiving and can't ever let him go.
i think of this song as being about the false self or the ego. As an exercise to what I'm saying, play this in a room that has a mirror. Look at yourself in the mirror as the words are being sung. Now interpret the lyrics as you're looking at yourself. Even if it's not, for me this song is about the ego/false self.
This song is about his dad who committed suicide. His mother drank herself to death as well--but the context suggests that he's talking to his dad and working through unresolved feelings.
