She Didn't Lose Her Baby Lyrics
So she cried alone for hours
And she did lines off the floor
And she thought of the unthinkable
Then she crushed up even more
She never thought they'd take away her baby
She didn't even know that anybody could
And even though she was the only parent
They still took him from her arms for his own good
He didn't scream, he had look of relief
His eyes never looked back into hers
He went right to the nurse
One blink and he was gone
So she cried alone for weeks on end
And she used up every vein
And she tried the unthinkable
Anything to stop the pain
She never thought they'd take her freedom
She didn't even think that anybody cared
They claimed she was a danger to herself
So they put her in a place to get repaired
She didn't scream, she had look of resign
She couldn't find a reason to fight
The darkest won't reach dawn
One blink and she was gone
And she did lines off the floor
And she thought of the unthinkable
Then she crushed up even more
She never thought they'd take away her baby
She didn't even know that anybody could
And even though she was the only parent
They still took him from her arms for his own good
His eyes never looked back into hers
He went right to the nurse
One blink and he was gone
And she used up every vein
And she tried the unthinkable
Anything to stop the pain
She never thought they'd take her freedom
She didn't even think that anybody cared
They claimed she was a danger to herself
So they put her in a place to get repaired
She couldn't find a reason to fight
The darkest won't reach dawn
One blink and she was gone

A dark topic no other genre and maybe only a few other punk bands would tackle in such grittiness: How the state deals with kids from broken homes and what effect that has for the parents. The song rides the dangerous line of coming off as critical of child services for taking care of the kid, but I think the message is something else. The focus on the mother rather than the child puts blame on the system for neglecting the mother though caring for the child. The mother might have failed in supporting her child, but the system, while rightfully caring for the kid ("...he had [a] look of relief..."), not only fails to support the mother, but also takes away the only thing worth living for ("She couldn't find a reason to fight...").
I am sure Mike only wanted to highlight the situation, but if the song is meant to concretely criticize the system, too, it could also be read as a plea for a more holistic system of child and family care. A treat-the-root-of-the-problem-rather-than-the-symptoms kind of argument. I am probably going too far with this one though...
Great song, great guitar solo. A song touching on a quite serious issue. This is something that loads of ppl out there could relate to I bet. Good one NoFx, it's songs like this that cement your place in the annals of punk rock history.
The state intervenes and takes a woman's baby due to drug history. Rather than get better and get the kid back she falls into postpartum depression and does more drugs, tries suicide, and is put into a "Mental Health Facility".
