When the Nights Are Cold Lyrics

Please don't ask me
To swim that river
Please don't ask me
For silver and gold
I can't give you things
That I can't deliver
But I'll keep you warm
When the nights are cold

The moon is high
And the stars are blinkin'
The clouds are driftin'
So slow and low
And I just can't keep
Myself from thinkin'
That I'll keep you warm
When the nights are cold

Please don't ask me
To swim that river
Please don't ask me
For silver and gold
I can't give you things
That I can't deliver
But I'll keep you warm
When the nights are cold

Well the moon is gone now
And the rain is fallin'
The songs are sung
And the stories are told
And the fire is dyin'
And the logs are fallin'
But I'll keep you warm
When the nights are cold

Please don't ask me
To swim that river
Please don't ask me
For silver and gold
I can't give you things
That I can't deliver
But I'll keep you warm
When the nights are cold
I'll keep you warm
When the nights are cold

Cover art for When the Nights Are Cold lyrics by Jimmie Dale Gilmore

This song reminds me of my spouse.
She expected more than what I could give. I will forever be haunted by thoughts that:
"if I were just a little bit smarter, I could have.." "if I were just a little bit more tenacious, I could have..." "if I could have just endured a little more of her abuse, she could have died happier" She expected a very different life than what I could give her.
