English Town Lyrics

Come inside, the air I breathe
While the band still plays
It's the end, of the coldest week
Come down into the sea

Cause everybody wants to get away sometimes
And everybody needs mistakes

When the sun breaks over the edge
Of an English Town
It pulls me awake, from a bad dream
And I don't know why
But I know I'm not, ever going back

In the dark, we can lose our sleep
We can both be kind
Cause I don't need, the pulling apart of sheets
Just to know, who you are

But everybody wants to get away from something
Everybody loses their way

When the sun breaks over the edge
Of an English Town
It pulls me awake, from a bad dream
And I don't know why
But I know I'm not, ever going back

It's a non stop voice
That can lead you out
But cannot, change it

When the sun breaks over the edge
Of an English Town

When the sun breaks over the edge
Of an English Town

When the sun breaks over the edge
Of an English Town

Paul Doucette wrote this song literally in an english town when MB20 was playing there. It's about the time that he realized his marriage was over and he was going to be splitting up with his then wife, Moon Zappa. He spoke of this during their MB20 cruise. You can find it on YouTube. Very entertaining stories were shared by all the guys. This is my favorite band. <3

Would love to hear what people think this song is about. It has a very dark, ominous tone...but I'm not sure what it means?

@cwagz Paul Doucette said he wrote this while Matchbox Twenty was touring in an actual english town. He said during the MB20 Q & A session on the 2013 cruise that it was about his divorce from Moon Zappa. He wrote it when he realized his marriage was over.

When I hear this song I think of someone who’s struggling with something internally - in regards to matters of the heart especially. This person has been through so much negativity, hurt and mistrust within a previous relationship of their life that it’s left them vulnerable and insecure.
“Cause everybody wants to get away sometimes and everybody needs mistakes” makes me think that this hurt we come from is something that we don’t want to deal with and a place we no longer want to be but we need those mistakes in our lives in order to grow. “When the sun breaks over the edge of an English Town” is essentially saying that the sun is starting to shine on this person and it’s pulling them away from all of the bad that they’ve previously come from. This person doesn’t know why “this sun” is pulling them out of it but they know that they’re no longer going back to the dark place within themselves. They don’t need the intimacy of someone to know that this person is good for them and that they’re helping them find a better, happier, brighter place within themselves and in life again — they just know. This “new person” is a voice that can “lead you out” of the darkness but “cannot, change it” This person can’t change the other individuals past, but they can help shine a light on them and pull them through it and show them that it’s okay to love again. (I hope my words make sense to you) but this is my portrayal of the song especially because I feel this is something I’m dealing with right now.
