No Furniture Lyrics

A set of hangers
in an empty closet
just hanging

No furniture
No carpet
No television
Things echo loudly

Ask why I loved this,
I’ll allow it

The surrounding
supported housing
We will always
choose the other

I was surrounded
when you were tense and you
spent a night out there
We aren't only metaphysical

Spare me the car ride home
I can stay here
I'll just lay here
Spare me the car ride home

We can move around
Do nothing
Feel nothing
We can go around
See nothing
Say nothing
We can rewrite
something

Move over to rewrite
I can tell you how this time
Climb back up to the top
just where do I get off
I guess it's fine we can all go
and do whatever we want
It's fine we can all go

Spare me the car ride home
I can stay here

I can stay here
We’ll all just lay here
Climb back up to the top
Just where do I get off?

Cover art for No Furniture lyrics by Everyone Everywhere

Sounds to me like they were living together but that ended ("ask why I loved this"), and they've moved all of their stuff out now. Maybe they're both doing one last run through the place, having one last conversation and one last goodbye, before calling it quits for good. It's tough for them, neither completely wants to let it go ("we can rewrite something"), but ultimately they know there's not other choice ("it's fine, we can all go and do whatever we want").

She offered to drive him to his new home but he would rather stay in their old empty apartment than spend any more time alone with her, which would certainly be emotionally hard for him ("spare me the car ride home").
