Damn You Lyrics

I wont cry myself to sleep, like a sucker
I wont cry myself to sleep, If I do I'll die
Now you fall a sleep with another, damn you.

Member how we use to escape for the summer?
Fireworks and sparklers would light up the black skies,
We'd hold on tight through our lives to each other.
Hello, hello were did you go?

We were two kids living life on the run,
Like the american dream.
Baby, nothing to lose
And we get messed up for fun
We went too fast, too young.

But I won't cry my self to sleep, like a sucker
I won't cry myself to sleep, If I do I'll die
Now you fall a sleep with another, damn you.
Damn you.

Flowers in my hair and your breath smelled like whiskey,
Promise anywhere that I go, take you with me.
Dancing on your feet like a child to the radio
Hello, hello where did you go?

We were two kids livining life on the run,
Like the american dream.
Baby, nothing to lose
And we get messed up for fun
We went too fast, too young

But I wont cry my self to sleep, like a sucker
I wont cry myself to sleep, If I do I'll die.
Now you fall a sleep with another, damn you.
Damn you.

Every once in a lifetime dreams can come true
Now and then when the stars shine
You meet somebody like you.

And I wont cry myself to sleep, like a sucker
I wont cry myself to sleep, if I do I'll die
I pray your life is sweet, you fucker,
Damn you oh oh, damn you, damn you.

She is talking about her experiences when someone cheated on her. In the song she describes how she doesnt want to cry herself to sleep. (waste her time thinking about him)

So:

In this song, Lana is sing about/to a past lover. In the verses, she sings about her memories with him, and she certainly seems to miss him at least. When she sings: ;" I wont cry myself to sleep like a sucker; if I do, I'll die" she wont allow herself to cry and give him that satisfaction, she wont allow herself to 'loose' in the sense that she hasn't moved on. It also frustrates her that he's moved on first: "Now you fall asleep with another". Overall, i think this song is about her missing a past lover, and hating the fact he doesnt seem as hurt or sad as she does, and the fact she lost him to another.

My Interpretation

One of the most honest, heartfelt, tender breakup songs of all time.

She writes of a love that's integral to her growth as a person; a love to whom she "held on tight for her life." But together they shared a love that's codependent and based on escape—meaning, the stakes are low. Living life on the run. Nothing to lose. Getting messed up, for fun.

And when Lana loses that love…. She can’t bring herself to grieve for it.

“I won’t cry myself to sleep, if I do I’ll die."

And why can't she?

TAKE IT TO THE BRIDGE.....

"Every once in a lifetime, Dreams can come true. Now and then when the stars shine.... You meet somebody like you."

In this, Lana is saying knows her life will be bigger than this, her first, love. This isn't her once-in-a-lifetime love— the dream-come-true love. The boy she loved, the love she had, comes around in this world as often as the night falls. This love was as natural / unavoidable / sure as the stars shine.

It isn't extraordinary in and of itself, but for the way it helped her grow.

She so sincerely loves this person, and the memories that she made with him.... And she can't bear to cry herself to feel badly, to regret anything, to truly hate her lover.... And that’s how she signs off:

"I pray your life is sweet, you fucker.... Damn you."

NOTES: [a] Are we all watching this via the YouTube video? The one where Lana is wearing the Dopey the dwarf baseball shirt? If not-- WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE, dear reader????

[b] One of the strongest points in this song-- Just enough detail to make it feel like a diary entry, or something so personal it can't help but become universal.

[c] "Hello, hello, where did you go?" //I love the softness in her voice here; almost conversational//

[d] I for one love that this song still feels like a secret.
