We Were Made for This Lyrics

I woke up on Angel Island in your arms
To the smell of burning bridges
And the sound of those alarms in my head,
We should have stayed in bed

But we held them up for ransom anyway
When the coldest days of winter were
The summers that we took aim at the Bay
And grateful wasn't dead

And like your lips were only made for me to kiss
Oh oh oh oh
We were made for this

While the girls all danced beneath a burning man
And the last waltz did somersaults to finish off the Band
Where they began in a wonder Winterland
All we ever wanted was to be alone
Learning how to fly to Sly, trying to find home
Underneath the Family Stone

And just like New Year's Day was made to reminisce
Oh oh oh oh
We were made for this

Love and stardust settle on us like a net
While Buckley's "Hallelujah" fills our ears from your cassette
While my heart stops beating, and you stop breathing, Juliette

You're the only thing I'm ever gonna miss
Oh oh oh oh
We were made for this

"I woke up on Angel Island in your arms. The the smell of burning bridges and the sound of those alarms in my head, We should have stayed in bed."

I think this is the last morning before one of the couple had to leave the other. They just lived a period of time in heaven with each other. Did everything they loved doing, and in the morning they woke up realizing it was time to leave. The only thing that either of them wanted was to stay.

"But we held them up for ransom anyway. When the coldest days of winter were the summers that we took aim at the bay. And grateful wasn't dead."

What I think is meant by this is that they held out until the last possible second before parting. The ransom they forced to be paid was time. They stole as much of it as possible before having to leave. Once they were apart - the coldest days were those when they were not together. The summers were cold because of the loneliness they each felt while away. It didn't matter if it was summer or winter.

"While the girls all danced beneath a burning man And the last waltz did somersaults to finish off the Band Where they began in a wonder Winterland All we ever wanted was to be alone Learning how to fly to Sly, trying to find home Underneath the Family Stone."

I picture one of the two walking in their home streets. There is a festival going on, thus the burning man reference, loud noise is everywhere and it's cod outside. They can see their breath from a reflection or infront of them. A flood of memories rush the person as they yearn for their partner. The persons home was not where they lived; it was with their partner and the family they yearned to create.

"Love and stardust settle on us like a net While Buckley's "Hallelujah" fills our ears from your cassette While my heart stops beating, and you stop breathing, Juliette"

Here I picture the two of them in bed. Their song is playing in the background as they get lost in each others eyes. The raw emotion they feel overwhelms both of them and they're lost in the moment.

With all that being said, you're probably wondering about the chorus. I left that out on purpose because I think that the chorus is the personal message sent from the person who left. It's their way of telling their partner it will be ok. We were made for each other and in the end; we'll be ok. It was their personal reassurance to the other. It was going to be ok. They would be ok.
