According to an interview that's on spotify, Emeli said it is about a vice, whether it's another person, drugs, alcohol that you know you is bad for you, but keeps pulling you back in.
It's about drugs, she stated that some people really depend on their dads and look up to them, so by her saying ''it could be your daddy'' it means that drug addicts rely on drugs, the way others would rely on their dads..
Also the line ''it can be the one you run to, the one that saves ya'' shows this because some people run to their fathers for protection and to feel safe, whereas the drug addicts run to drugs to feel protected and safe. She also sung it infront of her dad when she performed it at her old secondary school in which he is a teacher there.
I just became a member of this site and I adore this song. Emeli is amazing. But on to my interpretation, I think this song could be about a guy who turned a girl out used her up and didn't give a damn about her before he dropped her like a bad habit. She's recovering from the ups and downs of their "relationship" and just when she thinks she's snapping out of the spell he put her under, she starts to get pulled back in as she begins to reminisce how she was once chosen by this playboy.
Although I listed that interpretation first, idk why, my primary interpretation is that this song is about drug addiction, most likely a female's drug addiction/ recovery (possibly ecstasy as the drug of choice?). Just a thought... think about it as you read through the lyrics...
Definitely this is one of the greatest songs one would hear .. I also think it's about doing drugs to overcome that captivated relationship , where the man she describes is addictive himself ! ( You're looking like you really like him, like him , And now you're feeling like you miss him, miss him ... ) . Her performance reflects the deep pain .
I believe it's definitely about drug addiction. Initially, I thought it was jst her finding her falling back into his arms but the chorus starts with "put it in your pocket, don't tell anyone I gave ya.." meaning it's a secret remedy for all that she's feeling that she could escape into..
