"Change in color haunts me" could be referring to the singer's anxiety about growing older as he follows up with the changing color of seasons, "autumn leaves depleting." The greying of his hair or perhaps his failing vision could also symbolize his apprehension of aging. "The pretty faces, they all make me choke," I feel is referring to him laughing over the grim humor he gets when he sees beautiful, young faces, perhaps because he knows that the beauty of youth is only temporary and that they will succumb to death just like everyone else. The chorus drives home the fact that the singer is of a brooding nature as he casually posits the complexity and depth of ideas like "an empty mansion" or "an empty handshake."
