Gone Lyrics
There were times you should have stalled
As you sailed into the fog
Like a dog, I smelled your fear
Lord knows you should have been here with me
But you were gone
These days roll sleepily by
I can hear the old trains cry
There will always be a moon
pulling me away from you
You're gone
Gone are the days when the wind would brush my face
Gone are the days when you're the wind
Gone are the days when my heavy heart is worn on my sleeve
Take back your pictures
Take back your letters
Don't send me no postcards
Telling me you miss me
Cause I'm trying here, I'm trying here
And fuck what they're saying
My mind is made up
And they're all just starving
Like the rest of us
And I'm trying here, I'm trying here
Gone are the days when the wind would brush my face
Gone are the days when you're the wind
Gone are the days when my heavy heart is worn on your sleeve
It's your head or your heart
and you're too damn scared to start
It's in your mind and your soul
but you just don't know where to go.
It's in your head and your heart
and you're too damn scared to start
It's in your mind and your soul
but you just don't know where to go.
Now you're gone.
As you sailed into the fog
Like a dog, I smelled your fear
Lord knows you should have been here with me
But you were gone
I can hear the old trains cry
There will always be a moon
pulling me away from you
You're gone
Gone are the days when you're the wind
Gone are the days when my heavy heart is worn on my sleeve
Take back your letters
Don't send me no postcards
Telling me you miss me
Cause I'm trying here, I'm trying here
My mind is made up
And they're all just starving

And I'm trying here, I'm trying here
Gone are the days when you're the wind

but you just don't know where to go.
It's in your head and your heart
and you're too damn scared to start
It's in your mind and your soul
but you just don't know where to go.
Now you're gone.

Definitely my first favorite on the new record. I think it represents two people with totally different paths in life that have some kind of past connection, but it's long gone. I kind of picture a former romantic relationship, where one person is in and out of the other's life. And now the one always left behind is ready to move on and is asking the other to please stop coming back. Stop sending pictures and postcards, let me move on. I'm trying here.
I had initially interpreted this song as being about death ("sailed into the fog," etc), but saw the band live last night in San Francisco.
After playing this song, Jon mentioned having dated a girl he met in Seattle one Summer. She was an artist who lived in Tahoe. Her being an artist and he a musician, they decided to continue communication only through letters, not by phone or text. They both drove six hours and met at a halfway point, which happened to be a diner. He mentioned the name a couple times, but it escapes me. Perhaps someone else reading this remembers it better than I do.
Their time together ended after just a couple months, and this song is about that.
