Teenage Icon Lyrics
Oh, look at me, so ordinary
No mystery with no great capabilities
I could make out as if I had it
but you know
God, I'm so obvious
and I should let it go
Oh, I don't know
I'm no teenage icon
I'm no Frankie Avalon
I'm no body's hero
Reserved and shy,
your average guy
no piercing stare
Just out of shape
with messy hair
but I always figured I was somebody anyway
And now I'm guessing that
my moment must be late
cause I'm here
I'm no teenage icon,
I'm no Frankie Avalon
I'm no body's hero
I'm not magnetic or mythical
I'm suburban and typical
But I got it I got it
i'm overun with it all
Seductive, charming way with words
So effortless not leather clad or dangerous
but I always did it like a real rebel would
I had a photo which on Lennon may have stood
So I'm told
I'm no teenage icon
I'm no Frankie Avalon
I'm no body's hero
No mystery with no great capabilities
I could make out as if I had it
but you know
God, I'm so obvious
and I should let it go
Oh, I don't know
I'm no Frankie Avalon
I'm no body's hero
your average guy

And now I'm guessing that

I'm no body's hero

how is this song about old people who need youngsters to feel good about him/herself? isnt it like an autobiographical song? written by the lead singer saying he isnt an enigmatic frontman but an ordinary guy. this is a literal interpretation, i dont think you can take it any other way. where is the "enticing aand manipulating of young people"?
And perhaps it's about someone who doesn't believe that anyone other than young, idealistic, partying, naive, not fully grown (emotionally, mentally, and even physically) people could find her/him bright, fascinating, exciting, worthy, special, etc. Maybe it's about someone who thinks s/he must have a game to be liked, loved, accepted, and appreciated. And just maybe it boils down to her not seeing what others see in her true self..the face and brain behind that game. Who knows. Good song, though. I like the band.

...and heart behind the game. Don't wish to omit what is most important.

On other levels, this can be seen as realizing you're no longer young and have to accept that you're getting old. Also it can be interpreted as a guy realizing he's never going to be the legend he his in his mind.
The song's a JOKE. It's about an old person who needs youngsters to feel good about him/herself so s/he parades around enticing iand manipulating innocent, gullible, powerless teens with whatever charm s/he fakes. Hate the song, but like the band.
