Constant Conversations Lyrics

Well you're wrapped up in a blanket and you're staring at the floor
The conversation's moderated by the noisy streets below
I never wanna hurt you baby, I'm just a mess with a name and a price
And now I'm drunker than before, they told me drinking doesn't make me nice

You never know where some people will go
Yeah some people been hurtin' me
You can tell by look, by the slightest crook
In the neck or the blink of an eye

Well then they'll say what they say and they'll do what they do
But that doesn't mean a goddamn thing
You can listen if you want, you can listen if you don't
Yeah they'll talk, yeah they'll even sing

Everybody now, oh oh oh oh oh
They come singing through the window, singing through the trees, yeah
They're singing trough the bright spring leaves
Everybody now, oh oh oh oh oh
Yeah they love you and they need you, but someday you're gonna need to
Find some other kind of place to go, oh

Now you're standing in the kitchen, and you're pouring out my drink
Well there's a very obvious difference, and it's that one of us can think
If there's a bump in the road yeah you'd fix it,
But for me I'll just run off the road
But tonight you've got me cornered, and I haven't got a place to go

You never know where some people will go
Yeah some people been hurtin' me
You can tell by look, by the slightest crook
In the neck or the blink of an eye

Well then they'll say what they say and they'll do what they do
But it doesn't mean a goddamn thing
You can listen if you want, you can listen if you don't
Yeah they'll talk, yeah they'll even sing

Everybody now, oh oh oh oh oh
They come singing through the window, singing through the trees
Yeah they're singing trough the bright spring leaves
Everybody now, oh oh oh oh oh (sing it loud, sing it loud)
Yeah they love you and they need you, but someday you're gonna need to
Find some other kind of place to go, don't you know
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

The looped "that you'll never leave" voice in the backround I find particular devastating: I imagine it's his wife crying out to him to never let his demons take him away from her. It's amazing how pretty this song can be, yet the lyrics are very dark.

This song is completely devastating. For those who haven't read Pitchfork's story on Michael Angelakos' mental-health issues, I can't recommend it enough: http://pitchfork.com/features/cover-story/8893-rite-of-passion/

The meaning of the song becomes more clear as you read the story. His drinking got out of hand, the dark times became a lot darker, and he was relying more and more on his fiance to balance-out his bad habits.

mikec's got it right - Angelakos has had lots of issues mentally. This song is about him becoming more and more reliant on his wife to fix his troubles. The last four lines in my opinion are the most devastating: "If there's a bump in the road yeah you'd fix it / but for me well I'd just run off the road / but tonight you've got me cornered / and I haven't got a place to go."

This song's on repeat for me right now. You guys nailed it; he's a good writer with personal transparency. I appreciate being able to see his talent in every verse without a huge veil of mystery as to what he's getting at. I'm concerned for this guy, are we seeing another case of someone who isn't cut out to be famous, but needs his talent on display? Sad situation, if he keeps putting it out I'll keep listening though.

I think you guys hit it on the nose about the section about his wife; however, I feel like the chorus is talking about the fake people in his life: "You never know where some people will go Yeah some people been hurtin' me You can tell by look, by the slightest crook In the neck or the blink of an eye"

I think it shows how perceptive he is about the people who are real and loving in his life (his wife) and those who are not. In the music video we see him at a mansion, and it opens with an older relative asking him how he's doing. He walks off quickly after the comment and you can see that he's not buying people's fake kindness and "sympathetic words."

All around the video you see imagery of snakes blending into the environment, implying that some people's true sly natures are hidden.

People will talk words of kindness and even "sing" them to you, but "you never know where some people will go" or how they really feel about you. And most of the time, if you look closely enough, can tell that they really don't care with the "slightest crook in the neck or the blink of an eye." Their "kind" comments don't mean a "goddamn thing"

Just one correction: "Well, then, they'll say what they say, and they'll do what they'll do"
