Express Yourself Lyrics

I say the same thing twice I'm awkward when I speak
Ain't got the perfect smile don't turn heads on my street
Trying to be a superstar like everybody else
But being myself is something I do well
Whatever you do, do it good
Whatever you do, do, do, lord, lord, lord
Do it good, (yeah), alright

Express yourself, express yourself, whoa do it
See it's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
Express yourself, whoa do it

I don't make the papers I am far from JLS (JLS)
Ain't got the X-factor I'm not what they expect (Listen)
But it won't be long before my turn is next, to express (Ah ha!)
Now with all due respect
See whatever I do, (Yes!) I do it good
So whatever you do, do, do, do, oh lord, lord
Do it good

Express yourself, whoa do it
Express yourself, whoa do it
See it's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
Express yourself, whoa do it

(switch it up for me)

Lose my shirt and tie
There ain't nothing too high,
Show them what you've got (whooooaaa)
It's nothing wrong with perfect, imperfect
Now it's your time to shine

Express yourself, click your fingers now
Express yourself, (come on), whoa do it

See it's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
Express yourself, whoa do it
Express yourself, whoa do it
Express yourself, whoa do it

See it's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
Express yourself

Come on now (x3)
Hey hey hey! (express yourself)

Come on now (x3)
Hey hey hey! (express yourself)

Come on now (x3)
(whoa do it)
Yeah hey hey! (express yourself)

Come on now x3
Yeah hey hey!

(Fades out)

Wonderful empowering and uplifting song! I can listen to it over and over. The production and instrumentation on the record are well done and well produced. Vocals are creative and expressive. Great song overall!

However, the reference to JLS had me wondering "who or what is JLS?"... I think it's a reference that could have been omitted and used other lyrics that go with the theme that still rhyme but don't need to venture to a 3rd party "shout out". But, I guess that's just me being an american with no awareness of the UK TV show X-Factor and the band JLS that won in 2008... I googled JLS...

If it were my song I'd keep the X-factor line (which is quite transparent) but the line before that say:

"I don't make the papers, I don't claim to be the best Ain't got the x factor I'm not what they expect (Listen)"
